"Новичок-2014. Winter"

Greetings to all fans of Heroes of Might and Magic 3, future participants, and supporters of the traditional "Новичок" tournament. I hope the new season will once again delight us with great games and new discovery players.

This is our traditional, and also anniversary - tenth tournament for Новичок.
We do not have a precise and strict definition of who a "Новичок" is. This tournament is for those
- who only recently realized that you can play the favorite old game Heroes over the internet,
- who only recently found out that they are not the only one who can easily beat computers and that it's not so simple with a real person,
- who recently started playing with more than one or two heroes and building chains...

We do not invite fathers and grandfathers, we don't want to see clones, and would a medal obtained in such a dubious way even have value for a strong player?

The main goal of the tournament is to get to know each other and gain experience in communication and gameplay.

Winners of past tournaments:
"Новичок-2013. Summer" - The_
"Новичок-2013. Winter" - высокий
"Новичок-2012. Summer" - twaryna
"Новичок-2012. Winter" - 7z
"Новичок-2011. Summer" - Sky Pioneer
"Новичок-2011. Winter" - Sevensan
"Новичок-2010. Summer" - тенью бездомной
"Новичок-2010. Winter" - Сатир
"Новичок-2009. Summer" - Erdem

Participant Requirements.

1. A player registered on our forum or another gaming resource for no more than a year is considered a Новичок.
2. Players who have longer playing experience but wish to play in the tournament will be considered on an individual basis.
3. Already sufficiently strong players who have shown good results in any tournament are not allowed to participate.
4. A tournament participant must have at least one game in the seasonal rating according to HeroesWorld rules (you can play after registering). This is necessary to ensure that you are technically able to play online and have an understanding of World's rules. In separate cases, this criterion may be waived (if the player is known on other gaming resources and plays successfully there).
5. Players wishing to participate in the tournament agree to provide any additional information requested by the tournament judges.
6. Organizers reserve the right to refuse registration to anyone if they believe there are valid reasons, without a public explanation of those reasons.

Applications should be left in this thread. In the application, specify:

1. ICQ number for contact;
2. convenient time for playing;
3. when the first online game was played;
4. if the participant came from another gaming resource, they must write where from and their nickname on that resource.

Organizational Issues.

1. Leads - The_ (IСQ 241568808), Lim4 (ICQ 451224720, creating and updating tables, tracking tournament results), Grizvald (ICQ 592025309, compiling the participant list and selecting players for participation in the tournament), Judges - Pit for LM (ICQ 471401475).
2. The tournament is held according to the Rules of organization, conduct and participation in HOMM3 online tournaments.
3. For each game played, participants must provide a detailed report and detailed confirmation in this thread. Only in this case will the game be counted.
4. Technical results are assigned for games not played within the established timeframe.
5. All tournament games go into the seasonal rating. The list of reports will be passed to the Rating lead. Do NOT duplicate reports in the seasonal rating.
All tournament reports must be written using the automatic report writing system.
6. Saves of all games must be kept until the end of the tournament and presented upon first request by the tournament leads, judges, or any member of the AC.
7. Disputable moments, if any arise, should be discussed off-forum. For a resolution, you must contact the tournament lead or judge via ICQ and provide daily saves, ICQ logs, and other necessary information.
The same judicial decision is made primarily based on the tournament rules. If the situation that arose is not regulated by the rules, the judges are guided by basic logic and gaming ethics.
8. Based on the results of the tournament, the winner will be awarded a "Winner of the Новичок Tournament" medal under their avatar

Regulations.

Stage 1. Group Stage.
All games in the group are played on template 2sm4d(3).
Each player in the group plays one game against all others. 1 point is awarded for a win, 0.5 to both for a draw, and 0 for a loss.

One week is given per game. Games can be played in any order.
If a player has not played the required number of games by the end of the current round, they must explain the reasons on the forum or by contacting the tournament leads personally. "Disappeared" participants will be disqualified and replaced by players from the reserve list.

Two players who scored the most points advance from the group to the playoffs. In case of equal points, places are distributed according to additional indicators (in order of priority):
1. Berger Coefficient (calculated only based on results shown in the group).
2. Head-to-head match.
3. Points earned in a game "weigh" more than technical wins.
4. Points earned in a game against the LM team.
5. If it is impossible to determine who advances to the playoffs based on the previous indicators, players will be offered a tie-break game scheme. At this moment, it is impossible to foresee all possible combinations of results. Therefore, the final scheme will be thought out according to the situation that develops in the groups by the end of the stage.
In this case, the seasonal (permanent) rating will play a major role.

Stage 2. Team Tournament "New Players" vs "Legends and Myths". The Новичок team, consisting of players who scored at least 2 points in the group stage, plays against the team of the best HW players.

Stage 3. Playoffs - 16 participants.
Matches are best-of-3 (first to 2 wins). Time limit per round is 2 weeks.
The Grand Final is first to 3 wins, starting with a score of 1-0 in favor of the upper bracket winner; i.e., the upper bracket winner needs to win 2 times, and the lower bracket winner - 3 times.

Dates.

Registration: December 28, 2013 - January 18, 2014.
Approval of participant list: January 18-22, 2014.
Group stage draw and start of the tournament: January 24, 2014.

Rules.

1. Game version. The tournament is held on game version SoD 3.2(4.0) + HD mod + by mutual agreement HW_rulez (For correct operation, the patch must be installed for both players), and by mutual agreement WT.
2. The tournament is conducted according to the rules of online games in Heroes 3.
3. Restarts total 3 days (111+111+111 or 111+112 or 113).
4. In the final part of the tournament, the template is chosen by a draw from a list of 5 templates: 2sm4d3, jebus Cross, Panic, 8mm6a, mini nostalgia.

All players on the tournament participant list must do the following:
1. Check if your ICQ number is entered in your profile; add it there if it is not.
If it is in your profile, a small green daisy - the ICQ symbol - is visible under the avatar. If not, you must follow the algorithm.
2. Leave an application in this thread. To do this, click the Register for tournament button located at the beginning of this thread.
3. To create a report, you will need to click the New report button located at the top of each page of the thread and fill in all necessary fields according to the template. After that, write your detailed comments on the game.
4. To confirm the report, the second player must find the game report, click the Confirm report button, and also write a detailed report.
5. It is considered good tone to thank the opponent for the game.

Historically, the CM (Chain Mail) map has served as the foundation, and players learn to play other map types through it. It's also much easier for true beginners to start learning map schemes with a single template. I can't come up with one specific template for these tasks. Although, it's possible that this is a relic of the past, as the participants in this tournament have already played on all the map types before the tournament.

Many gremlins came, their external dwelling is under the castle, gargoyles built. Expanded to 5 heroes.
On turn 112 broke through to a grass secondary - there's Castle there.
Running around the respawn, collecting freebies, clearing the secondary with Solmyr and leveling up (got Earth magic), looted a scroll behind the gnomish dwellings, picked it up a few days later - it's Town Portal.
Decide to also build Cavaliers on the first (ended up with only stables, didn't have enough wood and gold).
It turned out one road was missing.
On turn 116 I send a chain deep into the respawn to loot resources for Mages and Nagas. In a scout hero fight, the Thieves get lucky morale and kill all the gargoyles, as a result I have to attack a pack of Imps with just gremlins, ended up losing about 30 of them.
On turn 117 I return the army via the chain, buy all the Nagas and go take the Dwarf Cottages, Crypt. Gold becomes sufficient for buying everything, the Nagas get a Fort.
Use the View Air spell to see where the opponent is, in perspective I need to go make contact.
On turn 123 Solmyr in the corner of the secondary hits a Pandora's Box for a pack of Energy Elementals, but it gives 45 Halberdiers.
Solmyr catches the View Air spell, before leaving the respawn, on a roadless path I reveal a boost artifact for Air Magic, try to take it from a horde of Magogs with 4 stacks of Nagas and singles, they kill 2 :(, but there is a chain artifact for 700.
I break through to the secondary, there are blockers, I have to fight a stack of Champions. I get onto the road.
I chase away the opponent's scout heroes, take the secondary - Rampart, head towards his main, start taking everything.
On turn 134 I take the last castle, the opponent retreats into the treasure zone. I stall with Solmyr, meanwhile at home a level 4 Mage Guild is built - I can use Town Portal.
Then some stalemate until turn 142, when the opponent comes out of the treasure zone over the mountains and takes Rampart back. I had a chain set up to loot a Pendant against Lightnings and a Cape, I frantically prepared to take it, hoping the opponent didn't reveal it. In the end all plans were ruined, I just try to chase the opponent's scout heroes away from the dangerous artifact.
Solmyr is in the treasure zone, trying to level up Earth Magic. With difficulty I kill 100 Minotaurs for a box and a Dragon Fly Hive - there's 20k gold. Then 40 Black Knights for a Library and a box - there's also gold, 15k, but Earth Magic finally advances.
The opponent runs towards his own main, I Town Portal there, sit in the castle. The Naga stack stays on the road, I check with scout heroes - magic is allowed, there are 500 Skeletons.
I attack with Solmyr, a war machine for 1000, minus half the skeletons. The opponent buys peace. I run towards Rampart, and a scout hero from the bushes reaches him, stealing Solmyr's purse.
On the next turn I can't take back the castle secondary from the opponent, gg.

Thanks for the game.

As an alternative, you could offer a choice of 3 maps: CM, Jebus, and 8mm6a. There are a lot of streams these days, and these are the most common maps. So, it's not difficult to master them.
Personally, I would be against Jebus, but for some reason, the overwhelming majority seem to like it...

Here's how I think about it: Yes, the dispersion pattern is a factor, but if a player doesn't leave the group during the skirmish, they're unlikely to make it into the top 3, which means we don't need to worry about them not leaving the group according to the schedule. In short, the idea is that the contenders for the top 99% will leave the groups even on dispersion patterns.

I've never seen anything like this before. In the entire game, I didn't see a single Griffin Conservatory or Hive, even though I had 4 Castle zones and saw most of the tier 3 creatures, and you can't do anything with just skeletons without the Money Purse.
It's a pity that on day 127 I lost Isra, who, to my surprise, was leveling up very well. Nagash also didn't disappoint — Earth and Air Magic had been leveled up long ago. In the Treasure Vaults, I took Pandora's Boxes that gave gold, and also one for level 5 magic, but against Solmyr there's nothing you can do without the Money Purse. I was surprised when I saw him in my main town. I struck him with Implosion, bought myself a turn, but they never gave me a chance to buy out the hero. The loser took the last Castle

In the first week:
1236 in the castle and 6 heroes, broke through to a secondary mine off-road, collected some gold, but it's very far to run to the castle, it's beyond the mountains, returned, and there are 2 exits to secondary mines via road guarded by 20-49 Lizards in a cave and with triple guard 50-99 Gogs 10-19 Medusas and 20-49 Mummies on the crystals. There is a Griffin Conservatory guarded by 10-19 Monks and an external dwelling of Gorgons guarded by 20-49 Snipers (which I never got around to until the end of the game).
In the second week:
captured my 2 secondary mines, built another 4 and level 7 in the castle, broke through 2 exits into treasure zones, and in one cleaned a couple of Dragon Fly Hives, in the other also revealed a few, Tazar leveled up elite.
In the third week:
cleaned 2 treasure zones well, took a Dragon Utopia where I got very lucky, got Tome of Air, a chalice, and a sword +12-3, collected 49 Wyverns and took the maximum Griffin Conservatory with Taz having expert Air and advanced Earth

On day 142 I break into the treasure zone where the opponent is running, take a Dragon Utopia and prepare to jump to the opponent stats: 32 21 20 18 86 Lizards 5 Hydras 53 Wyverns 8 Basilisks 4 Angels and single Serpent Flies
on day 143 I execute my plan there 9 Angels 7 Birds 10 Psychos and 62 Magma Elementals stats about 10 points lower somewhere
in the first round he casts Berserk on the Wyverns which happily kill the Hydras, I cast Mass Haste and charge into attack, in the second I cast Mass Slow a questionable decision, the Wyverns kill 9 Angels, the Angels killed the Birds I think, after which follows Armageddon from the opponent for 1130 and a retreat leaving him with 4 Birds and 62 Magma Elementals, me with 37 Wyverns and 11 Lizards after that I run around collecting the remains of the treasure zone, rebuilding secondary mines, need the cannon fodder, looking for something against magic, leveling Resistance.
On day 145 the opponent flies through the GO and captures my main
By day 147 I built Bears in the Citadel and Efreets, before that I also took 2 external dwellings in the treasure zone, on day 121 the opponent runs after me into the treasure zone, I take a Dragon Utopia, visit the Library, see an anti-magic cloak above level 3 and an Orb of the Air, take them and attack with the cloak, 10 Efreets and 37 Wyverns and 6 Pit Fiends
against 70 Magma Elementals 33 Energy Elementals and 4 Birds
stats: 36 25 24 21 vs 18 17 22 10 where we were hitting each other with bolts, I have 975, he has 560, where I turned out stronger, although I really didn't want him to run away

On the second week:
I captured my 2 secondary zones, built another 4 and the 7th level in the castle, broke through 2 exits into treasure zones and cleared a couple of Dragon Fly Hives in one, and revealed a few in the other as well; Tazar leveled up elite-style.
On the third week:
I thoroughly cleared 2 treasure zones, took a Dragon Utopia where I got very lucky — they gave me the Tome of Air, a Chalice, and a Sword +12-3, collected 49 Wyverns and took the maximum Griffin Conservatory. Taz with Expert Air and Advanced Earth.

On day 142 I break into the treasure zone where the opponent is running around, take a Dragon Utopia and prepare to jump the opponent. Stats: 32 21 20 18, 86 Lizardmen, 5 Hydras, 53 Wyverns, 8 Basiliks, 4 Angels, and a few Serpents.

In the first round he casts Berserk on the Wyverns, which gladly kill the Hydras. I cast Mass Haste and dive into the attack. In the second round I cast Mass Slow — a questionable decision. The Wyverns kill 9 Angels, the Angels target the Birds I think, after which the opponent casts Armageddon for 1130 and retreats, keeping 4 Birds and 62 Magma Elementals. I'm left with 37 Wyverns and 11 Lizardmen. After that I run around gathering the remains of the treasure zone, rebuild secondary zones (I need meat), look for something against magic, level up Resistance.
On day 145 the opponent flies through Gate and captures my main.
By day 147 I built Bears in the Citadel and Efreets; before that I also took 2 external dwellings in the treasure zone. On day 148? the opponent runs after me into the treasure zone, I take a Dragon Utopia, visit the Library, find a Cloak of Magic Resistance above level 3 and an Orb of Air. I take them and attack with the Cloak, 10 Efreets, 37 Wyverns, and 6 Portents of Doom.
Against 70 Magma Elementals, 33 Energy Elementals, and 4 Birds.
Stats: 36 25 24 21 vs 18 17 22 10. We blasted each other with bolts — I had 975, he had 560. I turned out stronger, although I really didn't want him to run away.
Thanks for the interesting game.

Confirmed. The respawn turned out to be good. An external dwelling of Air elementals, 2 external dwellings of Fire elementals (though one was far away and scouted late), and 4(!) external dwellings of Earth elementals!!! Those 4 dwellings are collected on the 1st week, and on the 2nd week ~35 Magma Elementals seriously wreck the local flora and fauna. It was problematic, though, with finances for buying and upgrading them. There were 2 Medusa dens: one small, the other large. I foolishly forgot which was which and attacked the large one first (turned out to be max), losing part of the army there. :smile20: Also on the respawn I find a Pandora's Box with 50 strategic groups of Faeries.
On the 2nd week I break almost everything I see, though I don't see much worthwhile. At the end of the 2nd week I suddenly discover 3 Griffin Conservatories, I go into them casually even with weak troops, they crumble easily. All 3 turned out to be trash-level. Not bad. On the 3rd week I take a Dragon Utopia on a secondary, they give me a Sword +5 all and an Armor +10 SP. I think about attacking the opponent, since the day before his Taz with bad stats was seen in the tavern, but the next day I see all his stats are around 20, so I cool my enthusiasm and go to the next treasure zone. There I manage to grab an experience Pandora's Box and a Dragon Utopia, which gives me Water Orb. The next day Taz shows up with good stats and a bunch of Wyverns. I think things are bad, but I look through the spellbook and find Armageddon, a cunning plan is immediately born :smile51: The opponent, in addition, completely ignores my units immune to Armageddon. In the end, I retreat after the 1st Armageddon to save my Birds. And here, probably, was a fail, because most likely I could have cast one more Armageddon, and then I would have left the opponent without the ability to easily fatten up further, but as they say, "smart" ideas come too late. There was also a thought to stop his Wyverns with Berserk, but I think I read somewhere that this bug was fixed, so I didn't risk it. Then the story is utterly predictable. The opponent fathens up further, finds a Magic Resistance Cloak, and crushes me (though the experiment showed he would have managed even without the Cloak). I realize that another retreat from the battlefield won't bring success, only drag out the game pointlessly, so I honestly sacrifice my hero to him and write gg.
P.S. I was somehow unlucky with Dragon Fly Hives in this spawn. I encountered only 3, and 2 were in a very inconvenient spot.

Thanks for the game.

Here's how I see it:
Yes, SMKA is a dispersion template, but if a player doesn't advance from the group on SMKA, the top 3 is unlikely for them, which means there's no need to worry about not advancing from the group based on the draw.
In general, the point is that candidates for the top 99% will advance from groups even on dispersion templates.
IMHO Jebus Cross is no less of a dispersion template; 50% of it depends on how the loot is scattered, what the Town Portal will be like, what is given in Dragon Utopias, and considering the game duration of current beginners on SMKA, the round of eight would be the same, probably ending by 4xx. So, although I was against SMKA in my time, I now understand that it is the only correct option in beginner groups.

Regarding the Small Map (SM). You can demo it, criticize it, and if it goes well or if you forget about these noob-like possibilities, just dominate on the map! There are still 113 restarts to choose from! On any template, no matter what you play, the start is important! Even on 8mm6a, it gives a decent boost, so it's hard not to win. SM is the most objective template for beginners and for people who haven't played Heroes for very long! IMHO. You can also rush. In general, it's a situational template where you can win on a low difficulty, which is what's being done:D

IMHO Jebus Cross is no less a dispersion template; 50% of it depends on how the spawn is laid out, what the GO will be, what the Dragon Utopias give, and considering the game pace of current newcomers on SMKA, the eighth player would be the same, probably ending by turn 400. So, although I was against SMKA in my time, now I understand that it's the only correct option in beginner groups.

That's the thing: on Jebus Cross, there are plenty (though I won't rule out that it only seems plenty but actually isn't) of weakly interdependent random factors, and central limit theorems haven't been repealed, so overall the deviation from the "average distribution" isn't that great. On the other hand, sometimes they are "quite strongly" interdependent. (For example, a poor respawn, but a bunch of goodies nearby in treasure, yet a very nasty GO that either requires heavy losses to break through with no further ability to claim the goodies, or can't be broken through, and the opponent takes the goodies.)
Also, on Jebus Cross, it's often enough to evaluate your own respawn, which is more or less feasible to do in the first few days, and count solely on reaching treasure, assuming that treasure will have what's needed. On SMKA, however, the contents of secondary towns and native treasure zones, which can't be realistically evaluated in the first few days, have a strong impact. The result may be a rich respawn, but everything else is worthless, leading to failure.
All this is IMHO, of course.

The thing is, on Jebus Cross there are plenty of (though I admit it might seem plentiful but actually isn't) weakly interdependent random elements, and the central limit theorems haven't been repealed, so overall the deviation from the "average distribution" isn't that significant. On the other hand, sometimes they turn out to be "quite strongly" interdependent. (for example, a poor respawn but a bunch of good goodies nearby in the treasure zone, yet a very nasty GO which is either broken through with heavy losses and the subsequent inability to claim the goodies, or isn't broken through, and the opponent takes the goodies.)
Also, on Jebus Cross it's often enough to assess your respawn, which is more or less feasible to do on the first few days, and simply count on entering the treasure zone, assuming that the treasure zone will have what you need. On SMKA, however, the contents of secondary zones and native treasure zones, which are impossible to assess in the first few days, have a strong influence. The result may be a rich respawn, but everything else is worthless, and it's a fail.
All this is IMHO, of course.
And what do you think about the option that you simply ran in the wrong direction? Just like on any template, the neighboring treasure zone is full of goodies?

With 1 secondary, the choice is of course difficult, but with 2 or more, the direction to run is obvious. With 2, you go to the treasure zone adjacent to the opponent, and with 3, to any of the adjacent ones. But for this, you need to learn how to read the template. It’s not for nothing that the mines in treasure zones are different. This applies to Smka. On other templates, reading is more difficult, but Jebus Cross is original in this regard, in the style of "who even came up with this nonsense about reading templates."
