Excerpt from the Book "History of the Kingdom of Men. Magic", Chapter II "On the Emergence of Magic" Possessing supernatural abilities has always been a forbidden fruit for humans. Numerous tales from travelers of different peoples about wonders they performed during their journeys always evoked delight, admiration, and at the same time, envy in us. But not one of the storytellers agreed to demonstrate their magical skills in public, explaining this with various reasons, sometimes ridiculous and absurd. Eventually, people stopped believing such stories and accepted that magic was merely a children's fairy tale. It even came to the point where such mage-storytellers were sent straight to the gallows with the words "If you are a mage, save yourself." After several "unsuccessful rescues," talk of supernatural abilities in taverns died down...
But the hopes of people for magical abilities were destined to flare up again. During the defense of the city, our general, Elizar, having lost an arm and being on the verge of death, killed the enemy looming over him with a wave of fire. This event became almost a turning point in the war; our troops managed to repel the enemy attack, and Elizar later could not explain himself how he managed to cast this spell.
Subsequently, more and more people began to discover magical abilities within themselves, and this "breakthrough" occurred in the most unexpected situations. However, it should be noted that few were able to become truly powerful mages; for the most part, everything was limited to minor harmless tricks... They say that the power of magic goes hand in hand with strength of character and human knowledge, but if character and magic are linked, why did many good and kind people become mages of darkness?... And many people never discovered any abilities at all.
Whether magic is a gift from birth or something everyone can develop within themselves is a question to which no one yet has an answer. Personally, I hope that someday I will finally be able to control the forces of nature, and perhaps even another's mind...

ICE AND FLAME
Preparations for Wilhelm's day are in full swing. During this time, a friendly atmosphere reigns on the city streets; even the executioners and guards look not as gloomy and fierce as usual. Walking through the market today, I noticed that for the first time in a long while, merchants from the Forest Kingdom have come to us, which cannot but be pleasing. Just in case, I bought a couple of healing potions. Standing at the counter, I noticed how one of the big guys grabbed
Arandor by the scruff of the neck and dragged him away from prying eyes. After some time,
Arandor was released, and on the notice board, one of the scribes posted a record of the interrogation:
- I don't like your face! Planning something bad, are you!?
- This is the second time you've brought me here like this to ask that! On the contrary, I am working for the good of the city, unlike you!...
- I saw you heading east with a large load. What were you carrying and for whom?
- Just supplies to help my friends. I have many friends among dwarves, dark elves, and other peoples. What's wrong with that?
- A "helper," is he! Is it your house that boasts a large red sign?
- If I had a sign on my house, I would never paint it red!
Walking a bit further, I saw one of the women trying in vain to stop the guards who were leading
Laris’y by the arms. As I was told later, she was being taken to the palace to see the king. This explained the woman's emotions, for we all know that few leave the palace without a noose around their neck; however, the next day
Larisa was released safe and sound.
As always after the market, I headed to the tavern to hear the latest news. There,
Alexeagle was telling how he was blown away today by a strong gust of wind during an absolute calm, and then he tried to show the position in which he flew a hundred meters. Apparently,
Alexeagle no longer burned with desire to go out into the fresh air. Could it be that someone who can control the power of wind has appeared in the city?
One of the patrons was boasting about new armor. To be honest, I would also like to have such, but they are beyond my means. I was slightly surprised by the absence of
Heroist’a in the tavern. It turns out something unfortunate happened to him. He tried to leave his house, but upon opening the door, he saw only fire before him.
Heroist managed to lock the door, but did not avoid receiving several burns. The funniest thing is that when the fire was extinguished, not a trace of flame remained on the facade of the house.
At that moment, some man burst into the tavern. For a long time he could not string two words together, but it was clear from his eyes that something terrible had happened. Finally, he came to his senses and began to tell his story. In his own words:
"I was resting after work, already preparing to go home, when suddenly a charming person passed by me. At first I thought it was just exhaustion! A beautiful dark-haired fragile girl, in a dark and dangerous forest, all alone... completely lost my mind... but no! I wasn't imagining things! There really was a girl there! I followed her. I was curious, what had she forgotten here? She paid me no attention, humming something melodically, gathering some herbs. Then I finally decided to approach her, but I was stopped by the sharp crack of breaking trees! Something was rapidly approaching us. I was already about to run, but I looked at her – she stood motionless with fear. A moment later, a creature of incredible size with eyes filled with rage stood before her. In a wild impulse, it dealt
Nephele a blow of terrifying power, throwing her several meters to the side. Then my numbness vanished and I threw a stone that happened to be at hand toward the monster. This behemoth immediately chased after me. I ran out of the forest with all my might, hearing only heavy footsteps and breaking trees closer and closer behind me. Reaching the city gates, I looked back, but saw no one behind. .... My God! Why did she go into that forest!?"
He said that all he had left of her was a ribbon that she accidentally dropped, which he picked up to return. Written on the ribbon was "GenIn".
This story shocked me and stayed in my head for a long time. I headed home late at night. The sky was clear; stars lit my path. I noticed that someone was walking ahead of me at a leisurely pace, covered by a hood. I didn't attach much importance to this and walked on, admiring the stars and immersed in thought. Then I suddenly noticed the movement of some shadow. It moved quickly, from roof to roof, until it was very close to me. A bright flash appeared around the shadow. Its eyes reflected the starlight, and a moment later it vanished into the darkness again. Hearing a sharp blow, I turned around and saw the lifeless body of a passerby, surrounded by bloody shards of ice! I ran up to him and tried to feel for a pulse, but
Arandor was already dead. Pity the lad, he showed great promise at the school of magic! I remember how because of his pranks I had to restore an entire volume of the book "The Bookish Bookman".
... Near my house, I ran into
oven666, who advised me to undergo a wonderful rejuvenation procedure with some old man.
