It really does seem like a cult – the lack of optionality and the inability to disable the new features of HotA (as it was implemented in WoG – the ability to play WoG under SoD).
Although, it would seem that this would only benefit the entire community.

HotA has a template editor where you can disable any objects (including all the new HotA ones). But it's easier to complain about the lack of optionality and the inability to disable the new features than to try to figure it out. This is what I call being a fanatic and being unwilling to accept anything new.
P.S. It seems like no one on the forum has taken on the task of reworking the templates for "SoD," even though there are skilled people here. Either everyone is too lazy (which is most likely), or there are some subtle nuances with their "updates."

Can you also fix Fly?
You can't fly, but you can disable the marshmallows, factories, graveyards (and generally any objects), Heroes of Might and Magic art, and even the dock.

After lengthy debates about the lore of the heroes and so on (allegedly "accurate" graphical changes), a new bug appeared: you can't fly over a pot of mercury (yes, the flight should be possible).
HotC has a template editor where you can, among other things, disable any objects (including all the new HotC ones). But it's easier to write about the lack of optionality and the impossibility of disabling innovations than to try and figure it out. This is exactly what sectarism and an unwillingness to accept something new are.
So, if I understand you correctly, any objects can be removed from any random template, right? And the map in the game itself will then generate without them? (Meaning any template can be modified?)
Then why not implement enabling/disabling objects with simple checkboxes in the game itself when creating a random map?
In HotC, what personally bothers me most is the clutter of new objects. If they are removed, you get SoD without bugs, with adjusted skills, convenient buttons, etc.: everyone would be for that.

Hmm. I didn't know that. Can you provide a link to the manual?

The editor itself is the file RMG Template Editor.exe in the game folder.
As for why it was implemented this way and not another — don't ask me.
Yes, that's correct.

I tried to do this 6 years ago. What are the differences from SoD:
1. Skills cannot be changed back: that is, Necro is nerfed by 2 times, Resistance is new, Scouting is buffed (+1,3,5 cells). For example, Resistance can be banned.
2. Docks can be banned everywhere, there will be no villages and hidey-holes, but dock units remain on guards.
New neutrals cannot be removed either from Pandora's Boxes or from guards.
3. New land for Conflux + new objects. They can be banned, but then there will be practically no objects for gold. In HotA, crypts in the highlands were replaced by ruins (you can leave them then), crypts cannot simply be put back. Bird growth in Conflux equals 1.
4. Always 3 stacks and a built second level.
5. Resources and treasure chests cannot be stolen from under guards.
6. Yes, as Grishwald already noted: Flight is the screwed-up HotA version.
7. Starting army is adjusted: Shakti has fewer Troglodytes, Fortress has more Gnolls. There may be others.
8. Mage Guild rebuilding is the HotA version. IMHO, it's worse than the SoD version. It only allows you to learn 2 spells at level 5! And all attempts at intermediate rebuilds go to waste! As a result, you can get from 6 rebuilds of Mage Guild level 5 the default Magic Mirror and the final Dimension Door for 70 of all resources! In SoD, you could learn everything along the way: Flight, Implosion, and all sorts of others. In HotA, these spells are even more important than in SoD, yet you can practically only get them from spell books, which is a complete mess. The significance of imba books and the scroll in the Mage Guild (getting Dimension Door from the first rebuild) has only increased.
In SoD, you might be unlucky with the Mage Guild, but at least on the resources spent on rebuilds, you'll learn some useful spells besides the coveted Dimension Door.

Okay, the HotA fly isn't great either. But when you're on a timer and accidentally fail to take out some imps, and then you go into a consulate, and then you get a tech loss for it – that's much worse. I've seen two such cases.
And in general, if you have the opportunity to do something in a game (like stealing with a fly), but you shouldn't do it because it's verbally prohibited... it's not very modern, to say the least.

Is it possible to remove any artifacts using the template editor?

2. You can prohibit the Dock everywhere, there will be no villages or hidden locations, but the Dock's units will remain on guard.
