After a six-month break, I downloaded several new maps, and I immediately started playing one of them. I finished it and decided to share my impressions.
The map is made in a "classic" style, without any particular surprises or tricky, unconventional author's ideas.
Size: XL, with a Dungeon. There is no water at all, so everything related to sailing is useless here. However, there are many Dungeon Gates and monoliths, allowing you to move around the world.
Difficulty: high (130%). In general, the map is played without much tension, although this may depend on the circumstances (more on this later).
The
plot is very simple and short: it is the story of an astronaut who crashed on an unknown planet. To return home, he must find and defeat the evil necromancer who rules this world.
The
walkthrough consists of two main stages:
1) dealing with the "ordinary" enemies;
2) the final battle with the necromancer Moldis, who is quite strong. Fortunately, he is in his lair behind the 8th Border Gate and cannot get out of there on his own.
We need to play as the Castle (Red player).
The map has everything you could want in sufficient quantities: artifacts, spells, resources. A number of heroes can be freed from prisons scattered throughout the world, and some of the prisoners will be very useful: for example, Chiana with expert scouting, whom I later enhanced with a Spyglass and a Telescope. And in one of the prisons, the main character's wife is imprisoned.
For victory, it turned out to be very useful to be able to learn all schools of magic (earth and fire magic are critical here, but all will be useful). Also, after some time, I acquired the Sphere of Vulnerability.
On the 4th month, I saw that one of the enemies (Orange) was using a Dimension Door. He appeared on the border of my possessions, but, fortunately, he did not reach the Castle, but turned in the other direction. Jumping ahead, I will say that this time the enemy was "jumping" completely legally. After some time, I reached the Conflux, and when scouting showed that the city's daily income was 9000 gold, everything became clear: yes, one of the enemies had dug up the Grail and placed it there. Although the monoliths are scattered throughout the world and there are many of them, it turned out that even on this map, it is not necessary for the AI to visit almost all of them.
After capturing this Conflux, I learned all the spells, but I did not abuse the opportunity to get anywhere without a fight: I played fairly, especially since it was not difficult.
By the end of the 5th month, all the ordinary enemies were defeated. Now all that remains is to uncover some of the dark spots on the map, gather strength, level up the main character, and fight Moldis. Don't forget to visit all the keymaster tents!
On the 6th month, I acquired some more useful items: I gathered the Alliance of Angels, the Statue of the Legion, and the Elixir of Life. By the way, although the parts of the Statue are scattered everywhere, the Legs are guarded in only one secluded place.
Finally, having gathered my courage, I broke into Moldis's lair. The first attempt to fight was unsuccessful: I stopped in front of the Necropolis, and he attacked me on his turn. After replaying, I stood behind the last Gate, and the next day I attacked the city. I reinforced the gate, cast Berserk on the strongest units, and shot down the liches. And soon Moldis was defeated.
Result: victory on the 164th day (6th month, 4th week, 3rd day).
I liked that such a large map can be completed relatively quickly without dragging out the preparation for the final stage, where on some author's maps you have to spend a long time in one place until you accumulate enough troops or resources.
