"Новичок-2014. Winter"

Greetings to all fans of Heroes of Might and Magic 3, future participants, and supporters of the traditional "Новичок" tournament. I hope the new season will once again delight us with great games and new discovery players.

This is our traditional, and also anniversary - tenth tournament for Новичок.
We do not have a precise and strict definition of who a "Новичок" is. This tournament is for those
- who only recently realized that you can play the favorite old game Heroes over the internet,
- who only recently found out that they are not the only one who can easily beat computers and that it's not so simple with a real person,
- who recently started playing with more than one or two heroes and building chains...

We do not invite fathers and grandfathers, we don't want to see clones, and would a medal obtained in such a dubious way even have value for a strong player?

The main goal of the tournament is to get to know each other and gain experience in communication and gameplay.

Winners of past tournaments:
"Новичок-2013. Summer" - The_
"Новичок-2013. Winter" - высокий
"Новичок-2012. Summer" - twaryna
"Новичок-2012. Winter" - 7z
"Новичок-2011. Summer" - Sky Pioneer
"Новичок-2011. Winter" - Sevensan
"Новичок-2010. Summer" - тенью бездомной
"Новичок-2010. Winter" - Сатир
"Новичок-2009. Summer" - Erdem

Participant Requirements.

1. A player registered on our forum or another gaming resource for no more than a year is considered a Новичок.
2. Players who have longer playing experience but wish to play in the tournament will be considered on an individual basis.
3. Already sufficiently strong players who have shown good results in any tournament are not allowed to participate.
4. A tournament participant must have at least one game in the seasonal rating according to HeroesWorld rules (you can play after registering). This is necessary to ensure that you are technically able to play online and have an understanding of World's rules. In separate cases, this criterion may be waived (if the player is known on other gaming resources and plays successfully there).
5. Players wishing to participate in the tournament agree to provide any additional information requested by the tournament judges.
6. Organizers reserve the right to refuse registration to anyone if they believe there are valid reasons, without a public explanation of those reasons.

Applications should be left in this thread. In the application, specify:

1. ICQ number for contact;
2. convenient time for playing;
3. when the first online game was played;
4. if the participant came from another gaming resource, they must write where from and their nickname on that resource.

Organizational Issues.

1. Leads - The_ (IСQ 241568808), Lim4 (ICQ 451224720, creating and updating tables, tracking tournament results), Grizvald (ICQ 592025309, compiling the participant list and selecting players for participation in the tournament), Judges - Pit for LM (ICQ 471401475).
2. The tournament is held according to the Rules of organization, conduct and participation in HOMM3 online tournaments.
3. For each game played, participants must provide a detailed report and detailed confirmation in this thread. Only in this case will the game be counted.
4. Technical results are assigned for games not played within the established timeframe.
5. All tournament games go into the seasonal rating. The list of reports will be passed to the Rating lead. Do NOT duplicate reports in the seasonal rating.
All tournament reports must be written using the automatic report writing system.
6. Saves of all games must be kept until the end of the tournament and presented upon first request by the tournament leads, judges, or any member of the AC.
7. Disputable moments, if any arise, should be discussed off-forum. For a resolution, you must contact the tournament lead or judge via ICQ and provide daily saves, ICQ logs, and other necessary information.
The same judicial decision is made primarily based on the tournament rules. If the situation that arose is not regulated by the rules, the judges are guided by basic logic and gaming ethics.
8. Based on the results of the tournament, the winner will be awarded a "Winner of the Новичок Tournament" medal under their avatar

Regulations.

Stage 1. Group Stage.
All games in the group are played on template 2sm4d(3).
Each player in the group plays one game against all others. 1 point is awarded for a win, 0.5 to both for a draw, and 0 for a loss.

One week is given per game. Games can be played in any order.
If a player has not played the required number of games by the end of the current round, they must explain the reasons on the forum or by contacting the tournament leads personally. "Disappeared" participants will be disqualified and replaced by players from the reserve list.

Two players who scored the most points advance from the group to the playoffs. In case of equal points, places are distributed according to additional indicators (in order of priority):
1. Berger Coefficient (calculated only based on results shown in the group).
2. Head-to-head match.
3. Points earned in a game "weigh" more than technical wins.
4. Points earned in a game against the LM team.
5. If it is impossible to determine who advances to the playoffs based on the previous indicators, players will be offered a tie-break game scheme. At this moment, it is impossible to foresee all possible combinations of results. Therefore, the final scheme will be thought out according to the situation that develops in the groups by the end of the stage.
In this case, the seasonal (permanent) rating will play a major role.

Stage 2. Team Tournament "New Players" vs "Legends and Myths". The Новичок team, consisting of players who scored at least 2 points in the group stage, plays against the team of the best HW players.

Stage 3. Playoffs - 16 participants.
Matches are best-of-3 (first to 2 wins). Time limit per round is 2 weeks.
The Grand Final is first to 3 wins, starting with a score of 1-0 in favor of the upper bracket winner; i.e., the upper bracket winner needs to win 2 times, and the lower bracket winner - 3 times.

Dates.

Registration: December 28, 2013 - January 18, 2014.
Approval of participant list: January 18-22, 2014.
Group stage draw and start of the tournament: January 24, 2014.

Rules.

1. Game version. The tournament is held on game version SoD 3.2(4.0) + HD mod + by mutual agreement HW_rulez (For correct operation, the patch must be installed for both players), and by mutual agreement WT.
2. The tournament is conducted according to the rules of online games in Heroes 3.
3. Restarts total 3 days (111+111+111 or 111+112 or 113).
4. In the final part of the tournament, the template is chosen by a draw from a list of 5 templates: 2sm4d3, jebus Cross, Panic, 8mm6a, mini nostalgia.

All players on the tournament participant list must do the following:
1. Check if your ICQ number is entered in your profile; add it there if it is not.
If it is in your profile, a small green daisy - the ICQ symbol - is visible under the avatar. If not, you must follow the algorithm.
2. Leave an application in this thread. To do this, click the Register for tournament button located at the beginning of this thread.
3. To create a report, you will need to click the New report button located at the top of each page of the thread and fill in all necessary fields according to the template. After that, write your detailed comments on the game.
4. To confirm the report, the second player must find the game report, click the Confirm report button, and also write a detailed report.
5. It is considered good tone to thank the opponent for the game.

I assembled an Elixir, Haven, Cursed Armor, and a 20th-level Craig with 30/30 stats in front battle. Thanks for the game!

It happened. There were a lot of heroes with control, but the parameters with three units didn't give much, and against AA with an Elixir, there was no chance. Thanks for the game.

Once again I am amazed at how simple and pleasant it is to play Necropolis on Jebus Cross. On the very first day, scouting revealed 3 Griffin Conservatories and an external dwelling of horses

The respawn gave a decent layout, but very large and everything is scattered. On the first [day] I collected 2 level-1 Griffin Conservatories, ate two Dragon Fly Hives. The third one remained – in the corner, two days' travel from the main. Finished it on day 121, sending only the birds downwards. The main hero just wouldn't come, so I had to level up Kalt, fortunately Air [magic] came, then Offense.

In total, from the respawn there were 5 birds, 28 ducks (built them in the secondary town), 2 angels.
When I saw via Air scouting and a den of thieves that the opponent was in the center with stats 14-14, I decided not to rush the exit (planned for day 124). It seems it wasn't in vain – the next day the opponent had already boosted stats to 24-23, and without destructive magic and with my modest 15-6, there clearly were no chances.
Off the main road, I found an external dwelling of birds, another Dragon Fly Hive, I'm gathering. By the end of the week I ate 3 Dragon Utopias, they give little, but I have Armageddon with 20 spell power.
The opponent comes running, I first try to hit-and-run, then attack. It didn't work out.

4 out of 8 matches have been played. There is 1 game played in another pair. I don't see any results for: Player_ vs Akella
Aiwe vs Lexmaster
RaiseTheDead vs artbocha
What is the status of your matches? There are 6 days left until the deadline for 2 games. Isn't it time to make some substitutions?

Everything is fine with him. He wrote to me on ICQ the day before yesterday.

That's a shame. There's nothing about that in the rules. And if you also leave the game on XL+U because you're losing to some overpowered opponent...

I just didn't feel like playing, so I left. I shouldn't have started in the first place, I agree. But the overpowered opponent was just an excuse, because saving and wasting time wasn't really appealing to me.

We started the first match with Akella, and he can't play this week. He seems to have informed Grizzwald.

I didn't feel like playing, so I left. I shouldn't have started in the first place, that's true. And the Naga was just an excuse, because saving and spending time on that wasn't really my thing.
In reality, you should fight in any situation, as long as there's a chance, especially in a tournament during the playoff stage. I often see reports saying, "I lost a bit of my army and that was it." However, it's worth noting that the tournament is called "Novice," so the probability of the opponent making a mistake is also present. I've had situations where I won games even when I didn't have enough resources to build Nagas. My advice to all newcomers: You have to fight! And it's never too late to give up!

However, it's worth noting that the tournament is called "Novice," so the probability of the opponent making a mistake is also present. I'm not used to relying on winning because of an opponent's mistake. Whether it's a "Novice" tournament or not doesn't matter much to me. You need to win on your own. Of course, there are almost always chances, especially on higher difficulty levels, which is understandable.

I'll repeat: I started playing in a not-so-good mood; I wanted to distract myself somehow, but it didn't work out, and that's why I gave up. Any game, whether it's a casual game or a tournament, should be played not just for the sake of it, but also for your own enjoyment, in my opinion. I didn't want to save the game because saying, "Sorry, I don't want to play anything right now, let's save and continue later..." feels somewhat disrespectful.

That's just insane! By the way, I never rest against Rampart if he has 6+ Gnomes. He's a tough opponent.

In reality, you need to fight in every situation while there's still a chance, especially in tournaments during the playoff stage. I often see reports saying something like, "I lost some of my army and GG." However, it should be noted that the tournament is called "Novichok," so the probability of an opponent making a mistake also exists. I have had situations where I won games even when I didn't have enough resources to build structures. My advice to all beginners: You need to fight! And it's never too late to give up!

It reminded me of the game with Hermit from the fifth installment of Heroes, where both players lost several times, but no one showed it :D

Chose all restarts, opponent took one. After that, we began.
On day 111, from external dwellings and heroes, 29 archers. Two roads, archer block on one. Stables found close to Castle, but Valeska had already run the other way into the underground. Sent the archers back home.
On day 112, I failed and couldn't upgrade the marksmen: accidentally clicked the blacksmith instead of the upgrade. Facepalm. Fought with regular ones, prepared a chain for the return.
Planned to upgrade on day 113, returned the archers to the Castle, but then it turned out I hadn't counted the wood, and now there wasn't enough for the upgrade. Facepalm #2.
No choice, built and bought swordsmen, went to break through the gr. orcs. They nibbled at the archers, had also lost some earlier to storms. 22 left.
Day 114, I scout with view reveal, find a wood mine, but nearby piles are only one. Dreams of cavalry start to fade. Set up a chain going home, upgrading archers, and transferring the army to Valeska on the other end to break through the guard into the corner zone. Mummies punished me for another 5 archers due to careless fighting.
Day 115 - overall it came together, got some gold, but no prospects for wood. This day, with nothing to build due to lack of resources, I park 1000.
Day 116 - I break through towards the village in the corner treasure zone. Decide not to risk it and build monks instead of cavalry (short about 15 wood, in the end never found it until day 121).
Day 117 - take the village, prepare a delivery.
Day 121 - buy archers and some monks, bring them to the scene, level Valeska on the golem horde, then hit Dwarf Cottage-20 with a Giant, everything drops perfectly.
Then transfer the army to the other end, where scout hero goes to hit the ghost horde for the Ring of +Speed. Punished harshly, but all marksmen survive.
Day 123, pick up the stat ring. Broken Valeska arrives with a spell book and after stables. I hit the Dragon Fly Hive guard (a stack of scorpicores). Everything except the marksmen gets eaten completely. Nothing left to take the Fly Hive.
I get beaten up, in the corner treasure zone I break through the guards of two more Fly Hives - a crowd of cows and a stack of monarchs. Scouting reveals 2 Griffin Conservatories in wasteland. I decide to collect the Fly Hives and take the Conservatories, but no such luck. Didn't know from which side or which Fly Hive to approach, even though all were small. In the end, had to postpone taking the first until day 131.
On day 131, everything was great, collected 16 Fly Hives, but the chain didn't work out on the last link. The timer was pressing, and I panicked and tried to run Valeska over the rocks there and back. Didn't make it, got minus two moves instead of minus one.
On day 132, ate a box (10 gold) and Conservatory-1 defended by Lotes of minotaurs. Aimed to hit the second Conservatory defended by a Throng of grand elders.
Day 133 - mana only for mass Haste, but that's all that's needed, dismantle the grand elders, go into the Conservatory. It's a tier 3 without a Giant. Just what's needed. Falls easily, lose only swordsmen, but the last stack gets morale and eats two Fly Hives. Another Conservatory is revealed. Check if there's a wasteland path to it and find two more Fly Hives and a Shield +4.
On day 135, collect all that with scout heroes and the Conservatory, transfer army to Valeska, who is ready to hit a box guarded by a pack of hydras. 10k XP there. Expert Air gives Attack, Wisdom. After the box, check the Dragon Utopia. Max level, and the army has 6 angels, 28 Fly Hives, little growth. Hesitate but decide to go in, stats are decent already, have mass Haste, mana for shields. They bit hard (-3 angels, 4 Fly Hives), but gave well: КВ, cup, Helm +10. Perfect for Expert Air, plus enough for angels and archangels.
Then run to the central treasure zone already with archangels, there's another excellent Dragon Utopia - shackles, Shield +4 all, and Necklace +3 all. For the third Dragon Utopia, jump to the computer through a chasm, but it's a low-level one and junk.
On day 146, I sneakily approach to jump to the opponent's main, land exactly on the tile where he can see me from his scout view :)
Take their main, there's a Town Portal. By this time I had already bought in a secondary Conflux and experted Earth. Then run to the treasure zone where, according to observation, the opponent is trying to find stats and control, and successfully jump and on day 212 catch Monere with shackles.
There 11-19-8-(43), me 23-26-22(~120).
10 angels, 10 birds, 20 Fly Hives, 12 psychos, storms and ice elementals vs 8 archangels, 4 birds, 70 marksmen, 30 Fly Hives, singles of gr. griffins.
I fail in the final fight, but the advantage in troops, stats, and magic doesn't allow me to lose.

Thank you very much for the game!

I took all the restarts, my opponent took one. Then we started.
On 111, from external dwellings and from heroes, 29 archers. Two roads, one blocked by shooters. Stables were found close to the castle, but Valeska had already run off in the other direction into the underground. I sent the archers back home.
On 112, I failed and couldn't upgrade the marksmen: on autopilot, I clicked the blacksmith instead of the upgrade. Facepalm. I fought with regular units, prepared a chain for the return.
I planned to upgrade on 113, brought the archers back to the castle, but then it turned out I hadn't counted the wood, and now I didn't have enough for the upgrade. Facepalm #2.
Nothing to be done, I built and bought swordsmen, went to break through the group of orcs. They nibbled at the archers; I had already lost some to storms before that. 22 remained.
114, I scout the area, find a wood mine, but there's only one small pile nearby. Hopes for cavalry start to fade. I set up a chain with a stop at home, an upgrade of archers, and a transfer of the army to Valeska on the other end to break through the guard into the corner zone. Mummies punished me for another 5 archers for careless fighting.
115 - overall, things came together, money appeared, but I see no prospects for wood. That day, with no resources to build anything, I queue 1000 gold.
116 - I break through towards the village in the corner treasure zone. I decide not to risk it and build monks instead of cavalry (I'm short about 15 wood; in the end, I never found it until 121).
117 - I take the village, prepare a supply line.
121 - I buy up archers and some monks, bring them to the action site, level up Valeska on a horde of golems, then hit the Dwarf Cottage-20 with Grand Elves; everything falls perfectly.
Then I transfer the army to the other end, where I use a scout hero to hit a horde of ghosts for the Ring of +Speed. They punish me hard, but all the marksmen are alive.
123, I pick up the ring for stats. Valeska comes running back battered with a tome and after the stables. I hit the guard of the Dragon Fly Hive (a stack of Scorpicores). They eat everything except the marksmen for good. No way left to take the Dragon Fly Hive.
I get wrecked; in the corner treasure zone, I break through the guards of two more Dragon Fly Hives - a crowd of cows and a stack of Monarches. Scouting reveals 2 Griffin Conservatories in wasteland. I decide to collect the Dragon Fly Hives and take the conservatories, but it wasn't meant to be. I didn't know from which side or which hive to approach, even though they were all small. Eventually, I had to postpone taking the first until 131.
On 131, everything was great, I collected 16 ducks (Dragon Utopias), but the chain failed at the last link. The timer was pressing, and out of panic, I tried to run Valeska there and back over the rocks. I didn't make it; instead of losing one turn, I lost two.
On 132, I ate a box (10k gold) and conservatory-1 with lots of Minoes. I aimed to hit the second conservatory guarded by a throng of Grands.
133 - only enough mana for Mass Haste, but that's all that's needed; I dismantle the Grands, dive into the conservatory. It's a level 3 without Grand Elves. Just what I needed. It falls easily, I only lose swordsmen, but the last stack gets a morale boost and eats two ducks. Another conservatory is revealed. I check if there's a path to it through wasteland and find two more hives and a Shield +4.
On 135, my scout heroes grab all that and the conservatory, and I transfer the army to Valeska, who is ready to hit a box guarded by a stack of Hydras. That's 10k experience. For Expert Air, they give Offense and Wisdom. After the box, I check the Dragon Utopia. Max-level, with 6 Angels and 28 ducks in the army, not enough mana to chow down. I hesitate but decide to go in; stats are decent, I have Mass Haste and mana for shields. They chewed me up nicely (-3 Angels, 4 ducks), but the rewards were good: КВ, Grail, Helm +10. Excellent for Expert Air, plus enough for Angels and Archangels.
Then I run to the central treasure zone with Archangels; there's another excellent Dragon Utopia there - Shackles, Shield +4 All, and a Pendant +3 All. For the third Dragon Utopia, I jump to the computer through a chasm, but it's a level 1 and junk.
On 146, I sneak up to jump to the opponent's main, landing right on the tile where he can see me from his scouting :)
I take his main; there's Town Portal there. By this time, I had already bought in a secondary Conflux town and mastered Earth magic. Then I run to the treasure zone where, according to my observation, the opponent is trying to find stats and control, and I successfully jump and on 212, I cover Monere with the Shackles.
He has 11-19-8-(43), I have 23-26-22(~120).
10 Angels, 10 Birds (Griffins), 20 Ducks (Dragon Utopia troops), 12 Psychos (Zealots?), Storms (Storm Elementals) and Ice (Ice Elementals?) vs 8 Archangels, 4 Birds, 70 Marksmen, 30 Ducks, single stacks of Grand Griffins.
I fail in the final battle, but the advantage in meat, stats, and magic doesn't let me lose.

Thank you very much for the game!

In the first game, there was so much money that I even built Psychos without a Citadel.
In the second, all the conservatories were level 3-4, so I decided to play for a Capitol.
In the third, I collected 10 Angels, wanted to go to the opponent, but while I was on my way, he already had Archangels and a Dragon Utopia, so I had to turn back - to find my own fortune, which I found in the form of a Dragon Utopia with a bag of gold and other junk. And there, they used Air Scouting every turn, so I couldn't hide. I was hoping to buy him off, but I had to fight. In the final battle, if I had had more mana and spells, I might have even had a chance, since I had Resurrection from Alamar, but as it was, with 11 Attack, I only killed half the Archangels) Anyway, if all beginners play like this, then I'm at ease about the future of Heroes.
Congratulations on the good game! Good luck going forward
