| At the end of 2003, unbelievable rumors began to circulate that Heroes of Might & Magic V was being made in Russia. At that time, Western companies did not risk handing over such large projects to countries of the former Soviet Union, so such things were hard to believe. Around the same time, an insider acquaintance of mine confirmed this information, despite concerted denials from Nival and Ubisoft. And when one of the early versions "leaked" in mid-2004 (it only reached the general public at the end of 2005), there were no doubts left. Since then, both companies have been very cautious and released information about the game in strictly measured portions. This is especially surprising in an era of total overhype, when PR managers start advertising a project five years before its release. But now the wait is almost over, and the veil of secrecy over Heroes of Might & Magic has finally been lifted. Thanks to Nival, I managed to play a fresh beta version of HOMM V. Of course, this is not yet the release, but it allows one to get some impression of the project. First, about the graphics. The game's creators decided not to chase polygon counts, but to focus on design quality. The vast majority of characters and locations look stunning. Purists may be disappointed that although the fifth part (unlike the fourth) resembles the third, the graphic style is still different: it turned out to be a sort of fusion of "Demiurges" and HOMM III itself.
The turn sequence in HOMM V is calculated completely differently. Instead of a banal queue, there is a peculiar timeline, as in some jRPGs. On this line, it is clearly visible who will act and when, so fast units can move two or three times while slow ones are still deliberating. Accordingly, the counter-attack system has changed – hitting big and clumsy units is much safer than hitting small and nimble ones. Nival tried very hard to ensure that the appearance of new powerful troops didn't make old soldiers a burden. Firstly, weak fighters are usually faster than strong ones, and secondly, one of the hero's skill tree branches allows increasing the damage dealt by each of their subordinates by a certain (but small) amount. And if you have, say, a dozen expensive and powerful angels, the total increase will not be very significant. However, a commander who leads several hundred simple skeletons and zombies will be very pleased. Considering that the Necromancer, as before, can turn fallen enemies into their loyal servants, it becomes even more interesting. Yep, these guys are right. Ubisoft is a company that wants to make money and wants to show its investors how profitable it is. Which means the end of the fiscal year is a rather important date. And it DOES coincide with the current release date for H5. You beta testers out there, do you really think that this game is ready for the shelves as it is now? Be honest. Given the time left until the current deadline, they've only got a few weeks left to work on the game, to balance the towns/units, to fix the sound scheme, to fix the AI (which you haven't seen...FOR A REASON), to fix the balance of the mage guilds, and many other numerous glitches and balance issues. There's simply not enough time left. So yes, let your voice be heard. There is still time to make a difference and let Heroes V become all it has the potential to become. Don't let it become another Heroes 4.

This is why the release of Might and Magic V was scheduled for this period. Do you really think the game is ready for release right now? Given the deadline, they only have a few weeks left to solve problems such as: balancing cities/units, fixing the sound, improving the AI (which you haven't seen...there were reasons for this), balancing the mage guild, and other important elements. They simply won't have enough time. So let your voice be heard. There is still time to allow Heroes V to realize its full potential. Don't let it become another Heroes 4.
What if that quarter is actually a fiscal YEAR end? Things start going drastically downhill... and to think, the 8x10 battlefield is STILL a hot debate all over the place... it is in Open Beta. Do you think they have enough time to fix that AND all the bugs?

Doesn't that depend on what "everything" is? What if there's no working multiplayer? What if the campaigns aren't finished? What if the AI is so broken it's nearly un-playable in SP mode? I have no problem with them releasing a solid workable game that has some of the original features left out for a patch or expansion pack....but as things stand now, it's the BASE of the game that's the problem. If you've got a bulky interface, glitchy sound issues, and a VERY un-impressive AI....then I don't care HOW many patches you send out. That first impression will leave a VERY lasting mark on the consumers. It'll be "stay away from MM franchise and ubisoft"
The final names of the factions in the Russian version of Heroes of Might and Magic V will depend on the results of the vote. Please suggest your own options if the proposed translations do not suit you. Just remember that we are talking about the names of the factions, not the names of the cities!
