I don't remember the artifact's description, but I always thought that Marchel's skull wasn't specifically his skull, but rather a skull that he always carried with him (similar to Yorick's skull from Hamlet).
He carried Fiona's skull, judging by one of the sphinx's riddles. Although, I doubt it's Marchel's skull, and not Marchel himself.
