Pao Archipelago

Good map, interesting. A very large number of creatures join, especially undead. Does it even make sense? Or is it just that I arrived at Markel earlier?

Only small groups of demons join "by default". All the others are regular neutral creatures. Perhaps it's due to diplomacy, or the stacks are very weak compared to the hero's army.
