Unicorn Empire

I have a problem with the green faction. In the second mission, I approach the fortress on the hill and want to upgrade my creatures, but I can't because it only accepts un-upgraded creatures. However, when I do upgrade them, I pay for the upgrade, and the unit simply disappears. I tried using a mod that allows me to buy them in the castle, but they aren't there. The slots are just empty. Please help.
