I'm still playing the map in version 2.0.0 with the same Necromancers. I'll share my impressions when I reach the end.
For now, I'll say something about the suggested main hero, Dexter. On this map, he seems weaker than any standard Necromancer hero. I tried playing with him in versions 1.0.2 and 2.0.0 – two restarts each – and it was very slow. There are several factors here. First, there's no "Raise Dead" skill. In the early days, the main force of the Necromancers is skeletons; if you manage to raise ghosts, it's even better. Zombies, due to their low initiative, are just a shield. The AI isn't that bad; it eliminates the skeletons in a few turns, and then, when the "Vampirism" effect ends (remember, this is the beginning of the game, and the spell lasts for 3-4 turns), it starts attacking the zombies. As a result, from battle to battle, the actual strength of the Necromancer's army doesn't increase because only zombies remain. If you play with skeleton archers, the AI effectively breaks through the zombie shield and retaliates. Then it eliminates the skeletons. The archers are weak, and the neutral creatures on the map are strong – they won't inflict critical damage on them. Even a battle with Harpooners looks bleak. Dexter is still somewhat useful if he learns "Slow." Despite the fact that there are many altars, it only appeared 2 out of 5 times for me. (All spells are randomized and often repeat). The second point: having a good "Darkness" skill, you can try your luck in the Magic Tower. There are few resources, but you can manage 4 levels (in a couple of weeks – after that, all the opponents will arrive), but you won't have much of an army. It seems feasible, but the Necromancer arrives first (in my case), and the battle is based only on the number of troops, and "Vampirism" on zombies and "Berserk" – it's all in vain.
Dexter somehow ends up under the Barbarian flag. This is another problem – in the tavern, it's difficult to find your own heroes. When, for the next restart, Lucretia appeared in the tavern, I took her (I wanted to use her to learn "Raise Dead"), started developing her, and was surprised at how easy it was: she develops quickly, and the opponents aren't scary at all (it's not them chasing my main hero, but she's chasing them). And Dexter walks from shelter to shelter with zombies: bring this, fetch that.
I can agree that Dexter looks weaker than all the other new heroes on the strategy map. I'll add "Raise Dead" to him when the opportunity arises.
Regarding the heroes in the tavern – before starting the map, it's better to remove the random castle and set the one for which you will play; otherwise, heroes from the initially generated castle will appear in the tavern. It's a kind of game bug.
