Alone in the Void

April 14

It has already been 37 days since we arrived on this island, which became our last refuge. We were lucky to make it here, though far from all of us did, and I dare say that life has gradually begun to stabilize. Former r I wouldn't say we've returned to our former lives... No! That everyday hustle that accompanied us almost since birth... The rat race, living at a frantic pace for the sake of incomprehensible goals and false values... All that is in the past, and soon it will be forgotten like a bad dream. People have gradually begun to come around after those terrible events. Not long ago they were ready to tear each other's throats out, seeing every stranger as a threat, but now they are learning to trust each other again and combine their efforts to survive.
Meanwhile, the dangers facing us have not diminished. Yes, we are no longer surrounded by huge hordes of infected, as in those cities where we had to hide for a long time, but the jungle around us provides excellent cover for our enemies, and any sudden attack on their part could result in serious losses for us. Wild animals, diseases, the infected who have overrun the entire eastern part of the island, and then there are these... people obsessed with some incomprehensible ideas, calling themselves an order. We pose no threat to them, yet they want to slaughter us and refuse any negotiations! And this is in a situation where every survivor's life is so precious in the struggle against the infected! In short, we have enough headaches as it is, and our leader is making every effort to secure and strengthen our camp. However, we haven't made much progress in that regard yet. Camouflage and cans hung on wires around the perimeter are unlikely to solve our problems in the long run...
...
Today didn't seem to promise anything bad at first. Finally, the heavy rains gave way to clear weather, which allowed us to significantly replenish our supplies of food and firewood. But soon an inexplicable feeling of panic seized the residents of our camp, and everyone was rushing from side to side as if preparing to repel an attack by hordes of infected. In their haste, some messed up the tasks they were given, which seriously agitated those around them. Gur instead of helping others ran around the camp shouting "Fus Ro Dah!" at the top of his lungs into the void. And our "everyone's favorite" critic of the youth, who initially watched everything from the sidelines and muttered something under her breath, decided to put pressure on the already irritable Uranium235, constantly getting in his way and asking completely inappropriate questions. I could only overhear some of them:
- I don't recall seeing you among us before, dearie! Or are you an enemy who has slipped into our ranks?
- At your age, I wouldn't rely on my memory, especially one like that! I saw sclerosis pills in the doctor's bag; it's time you started taking them! – Uranium235 answered angrily, his entire demeanor showing he was not in the mood for conversation.
- Stop messing with my head! I can see right through people like you! You sat and waited here until we flew in, just so you could kill us all later!
- Stop talking this nonsense! I arrived here on the same flight as the others!
- I don't believe it! You cannot be one of us! They say you're a jack-of-all-trades, that you clearly have more than 4 talents, while we've got nothing but butterfingers over here who can't do anything!
- Stop listening to these idiotic rumors! There isn't a grain of truth in them! – Uranium235 exclaimed and hurried away from the nagging old woman before another question flew his way.
A similar situation befell Ment. He was under increased scrutiny, which he clearly did not desire.
Gradually, with the onset of night, all the unrest subsided. The camp residents, realizing that nothing threatened them, returned to their daily routines. Finally having eaten their fill, everyone lay down to sleep, leaving one person on watch. I couldn't fall asleep and kept tossing and turning. Turning onto my other side once more, I noticed that my neighbor was also suffering from insomnia. Something was clearly bothering him. I tried to ask what happened, but he didn't answer me for a long time, being immersed in his thoughts. Finally, he broke his silence with a quiet whisper:
"You know, I feel very uneasy. I feel like something is wrong inside me. As if I'm burning from within!"
I immediately suggested he seek help from the doctor, to which he responded with a sharp refusal. "Sigh, I knew I should have used protection...", - he said and sank back into his distress.
It was already deep into the night when suddenly a piercing scream rang out. I jumped out of the tent and saw my friend before me, trying in vain to fight off an infected that had clamped onto his neck. The infected bit off a piece of flesh and loosened its grip slightly, allowing its victim to break free and crawl away. Someone tried to hack at it to avenge their comrade but was bitten on the arm by another infected. Someone tried to flee from the infected deeper into the jungle but stumbled upon someone they certainly didn't expect to see there. Fortunately, he managed to hide from the stranger in time, as a meeting with him clearly promised nothing good.
Finally, the attack of the infected was repelled. Without any delay, one of the wounded was placed on the operating table. It was decided to amputate the arm before it was too late to prevent the infection from spreading through the body. The operation was generally successful, and there are decent chances that at least one will be saved.
The second was far less lucky. Everyone around, and he himself, understood perfectly well that with such injuries, hoping for salvation was pointless. The bitten man managed to somehow get on his feet and glanced at those around him. They silently looked away. Finally, he turned and walked out of the camp without saying a word, taking only a couple of his things. Everyone understood perfectly why he was doing this...
After these events, there was no question of sleep. Everyone sat in silence before the campfire until someone finally broke the silence to speak about the one who left us. With the words "He cherished her until the very end, apparently sensing that it would turn out this way. Now she will be useful to him," he finished his speech, after which everyone slowly dispersed to their tents.
In the morning we still tried to find him, but our search was unsuccessful.
