I really don't like losing creatures for no reason, and if I take horses, Vlad starts beating them with his magic fist first, so I freed them but didn't want to take them until I play against Vlad and capture his town.

I acted based on roughly the same considerations, I just didn't put them in the battle. But in this case, there is one drawback - one of the stacks of creatures is not used, which could have been used to "cover" the main stacks from attack.
