Even though I leveled up the skill and attack, the ballista wasn't very effective. It's not like Deleб, which can take out hordes. It's a pity there wasn't a mentor; I could have at least gotten fire arrows and gotten rid of the useless darkness at that point, since I didn't find anything else in the city except for sorrow.
