And can I play as elves? I just cleared the arena, and they gave me 10 reputation... By the way, the second hero here seems really tough; he defeats me before I can even take a turn. I mean, I could spend an hour and defeat him, but I'm afraid nothing will be left of my army.

Elves are neutral. They support the humans if the hero decides to attack the orcish city. You can't win solely by playing as them, but you'll still get bonuses from 100 reputation. You don't necessarily have to kill the second hero right away; you'll return to this city later, so build up your army for now.
