When you didn't roll the right map...

Воsставший 1967
Okay. In general, instead of all that stuff called "family psychology," this film would have been enough. Sometimes, you get the feeling that the runtime goes in the wrong direction, and the supporting actors are a bit caricatured and wooden, and the choreography is traditionally not very good, and there are a couple of anachronisms that are jarring – a person in Edo couldn't have said that, it wasn't part of the lexicon at the time. The latter might be partially due to the translation, but in Japanese, everything is well-done. But overall, it's okay.

It seems that at the beginning of the last century, they didn't quite understand how to make films. But respect to these guys, and I feel sorry for this good guy. It's decent.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

After the previous installment, it feels like they took a step back.

What's good: well, as we've come to expect from Spider-Man in all universes, the action scenes have great dynamics. There's humor. There are references.

What's bad: they added a lot of unnecessary and unpleasant things. Most importantly, the main plot dilemma is just ridiculous.

Because (spoiler)

you have to kill uncles and captains to save the Universe? Seriously? Did a 14-year-old write the plot?

The excessive immersion in the criminal underworld of America didn't appeal to me, to be honest. The teenage angst could easily have been reduced threefold, especially for Miles (Gwen's is still relatively okay, there was a moment where it almost made me shed a tear). And if they had cut out all this unnecessary stuff, who knows, maybe they could have finished the film and released it as a complete product, instead of leaving it with a "To be continued..." It would have been nice.

In short, if you're not a die-hard Spider-Man fan like me, I'd probably advise you to skip this one... The previous installment was great, but this one... unfortunately, it's not.

Reacher (2022)

Excellent. Too good for your 2022, too. It seems like the series was filmed in the last century. And it's on Amazon. I wonder if the second season will be filled with infernal white supremacists who worship Hitler and eat colored children?

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, 2013, USA, United Kingdom)

Life-affirming. Awesome!
Actually, it's a very good comedy, almost without overacting, stupid humor, and all sorts of nonsense that they often like to include. A beautiful film, full of irony; I haven't had such enjoyment from movies in a long time.
Interesting fact: this is not the first film in history with this title; it would be interesting to watch its predecessor from 1947 and compare...

Barbie (2023)

Finally, millions are being spent on postmodern arthouse films, and they are grossing billions. Excellent, I really enjoyed it. It even made me want to watch more arthouse films. The only downside is that I fell into the trap... 😞

Trap

Well, you all know which movie needs to be written about in this thread next, right?

Oppenheimer (Oppenheimer, 2023)
Quite a powerful piece. When I started watching and saw the three-hour timer, I thought it would be heavily dragged out, but no, all three hours fly by at a breakneck pace. At some point I even thought I'd accidentally messed up the player settings and it was playing at x1.5 speed, plus people were talking insanely fast, practically in a tongue-twister manner.
On one hand, the time and place are chosen excellently, a very romantic setting. On the other, the themes touched upon are also topical — in the detective part there are grim conclusions about humanity, and in those grim conclusions scientists are stewing, people who just wanted the Germans not to take over the world, but it turned out somewhat differently... My recommendation is strictly positive, Nolan hasn't lost his touch.

An interesting fact from real life:

Having lost his security clearance for classified materials, Oppenheimer continued teaching and conducting research with the support of many members of the scientific community who considered him unjustly wronged. In 1966 he left the Institute for Advanced Study and the following year died of throat cancer.

In December 2022, a few days after the release of the "Oppenheimer" trailer, US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm annulled the 1954 decision to revoke Oppenheimer's permission to access classified information. She acknowledged that the proceedings in this case had been conducted with violations.

So Robert Oppenheimer died, and only 56 years later, and only because Nolan conceived a little movie based on his story, did people remember him and decide to publicly exonerate the hero. Curious, to say the least.

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

A good movie. I like the crime theme in American films, I mean not when police catch some dangerous terrorists through super-deduction, but something more down-to-earth, showing poor neighborhoods, rednecks injecting crack, that kind of thing. And it has that here, especially in the first half, which atmospherically resembles the first season of True Detective, but without the long nihilistic monologues of McConaughey. There are even some actors from that, not yet released at the time, series. At the same time, they managed to create a truly interesting and intricate plot with a good ending. A well-deserved 7.6 on IMDb, the rating on Kinopoisk is slightly lower, probably due to the terrible dubbing. If the description seems good, you can safely watch it.

I watched a review of "The Word of a Guy." Naturally, I'm not going to watch the movie myself; I've had enough of this garbage in the 90s. Siver, do you happen to know Snoop Dogg? Do you listen to rap?

Hey, by any chance, do you know Snoop Dogg?

We haven't shared a drink together, if that's what you mean.

Don't you listen to rap?

No.

Watched Chip 'n Dale, the episode about the ruby. It was funny. There was this robot with a laser, and I remember being really into it as a kid, but now it seems a bit weird. And Fatso's dad has some great jokes. The only thing that bothered me was the high-pitched squeaking of the chipmunks and Gadget. Also watched a bit of Tom and Jerry. But that's really retro, and the quality is terrible.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

What can I say? Let's put it this way: it's not worse than the second and third films in the series. Which, in itself, is an achievement, because I expected complete garbage. So, if you like the second and third films to some extent, what makes this one so much worse? And if you're a normal person and understand that only the first one was good, does it really matter what they filmed in the fourth one? That's why I postponed watching the film and now I'm writing all this as a latecomer. And, frankly, my opinion hasn't changed; I just occasionally come across discussions about this film, so I had to watch it to avoid feeling confused and irritated by discussions about something I don't know about. It's clear that in some places they tried to play everything ironically, but these attempts still feel weak and desperate, like an actor who comes on stage, realizes that he can't pull off the act, and tries to make understanding jokes about it in places. On the other hand, as I said, the second and third parts weren't much better, but they were presented with the utmost seriousness and with a filter that had become tiresome by that time. So, it's good enough to watch with a beer. And if anyone is interested in the plot but doesn't want to spend time watching it or even reading Wikipedia, the machines resurrected Neo and Trinity and put them back into the Matrix. Some of the machines switched sides and joined the humans. 60 years have passed. Neo and Trinity woke up after a long imprisonment and now they can fly and do all sorts of crazy things in the Matrix. And that's what they'll do. In my opinion, this plot is an answer to many viewers who thought that the ending of the original trilogy was too dark, as if the machines weren't allowed to win, and Neo and Trinity died. Well, now you get it.

It's a rather minor spoiler, as you can figure it out by looking at the actors' names, but okay...

Based on your description, I understand why people are disappointed, because in the previous installments, there was a hint of a multi-layered (at least two layers of unreality) model, like in Inception, but if instead of that development, everything just starts over, then it really must be a bit boring. But it's also understandable, because according to current trends, "reboots" are being made more often than the development of ideas...

Personally, I think the film turned out to be pretty much what I expected. It had a couple of decent ideas that you could say were "okay" – Neil Patrick Harris is good in the role of the architect, and the concept of a therapist trying to bring back a guy (not necessarily Neo) who has realized he's in the Matrix, as if it were all a dream and didn't happen, is quite interesting. Especially considering films like "All Fears of Bo" and "Father," which offer a fascinating depiction of how people with mental disorders perceive the world.
Otherwise, it's just a film made solely for profit, and even then, the studio would have released it with either the original cast or without. Perhaps they should have focused on other characters from the universe and told a different story, similar to those in "Animatrix," but we got what we got.
