The difficulty is the highlight of this campaign; I'm playing it for the 4th time, and it's still challenging, which makes it interesting.

Do you use EWA? I play with it. It significantly increases the difficulty of clearing even with a Warrior. Tell me, what is the best direction to expand after the first map? Should I go to the portal near the castle or open a path to the Gnomes? Half of the neutrals were wiped out by Imps with Wave and Chain Lightning. Only the Gnomes' boots remain, guarded by an army of Gnomes (15 Arcata Dragons (no Sandro) - I don't know how to deal with them - they are the only ones left from the entire army and they finish off the remnants of my Imps (Skilled Darkness - slow, no Dispel/Summon/Ball of Lightning, but planned/Spells/Attack with Imps). The portal near the castle has a Dark Elf army with initiative, and where does it lead?)). Their second turn = a massacre of my troops. Maybe I should open a path to the Gnomes? What's there? Will the Gnomes rush into the hole immediately or after some time? I wouldn't want to encounter them and then have to rewind, at this level of development with Dark Elf warlords and Arcata dragons :) or should I gather troops and eliminate the Dark Elves guarding the portal (where does it lead)?
My development in the first mission after moving to the surface was approximately as follows: before the first caravan, the main goal is to eliminate the Wolves on the path (with Wave/Chain Lightning/Darkness on the run); after the first caravan, clear the sawmill + the Tower of Elements, and clear as much territory as possible near the castle; the second caravan - the first raid, clearing everything up to the first Gnome garrison; the third caravan - a full-scale raid, up to killing Hangwul; the fourth caravan - killing Wulfstan and ending the mission. The portal with the Dark Elves is only cleared at the very end.
My hero build: for the first half (war with the Demons) - Chaos/Spell/Artifact/Logic/Darkness - a build for Devil's Strike for quick completion; for the second half - Attack/Darkness/Light (with Wrath + Storm Wind and Protection Aura, a must-have)/Logic (Sharp Mind, a must-have)/Defense or Artifact, if it drops.
EWA, no, the neutral creatures from there are too tough, especially since I'm playing the first version of the Campaigns, where the neutral creatures are completely random.
My development in the first mission after moving to the surface was roughly as follows: before the first caravan, the main goal was to eliminate the wolves at the passage (using a wave/chain/darkness formation during retreats). After the first caravan, I cleared the sawmill + the elemental tower, and cleared as much territory as possible around the castle. The second caravan marked my first real foray, clearing everything up to the first garrison of dwarves. The third caravan was a full-fledged foray, going all the way to killing Hangwul. The fourth caravan involved killing Wulfsten and completing the mission. The portal with the Dark Elves was only dealt with at the very end.
My hero build was as follows: for the first half (the war with the demons), I used Chaos/Charisma/Intelligence/Logistics/Darkness – a build focused on Devil's Strike for quick completion. For the second half, I used Attack/Darkness/Light (with Wrath + Storm and Protection as must-haves)/Logistics (Sharp Mind is a must-have)/Defense or Intelligence, if it dropped.
Okay, I didn't touch the portal, I rushed towards the dwarves... it's about 50% different from yours. Where's Mentor???))) I miss him so much! He was there on the first map... I managed to snag a Black Dragon Pup, at least. On the second map, the nasty random generator gave me shooting instead of a Black Dragon Pup (it should have dropped already), and it gave me some dark replenishments. Damn, it looks like things are getting tough... the first map was just a warm-up (and I got lucky there - 16 gold dragons joined, and the map was left as clean as Valuyev's head). Thanks. I'll keep going just out of stubbornness. :)
Mentor is somewhere in the middle of the map, guarded by 3 stacks of dwarven dragons, but at least they don't grow.

And there was a bug – I attacked a Vizier and had to fight a gnome (who was in the first Castle along the path) – (before that, none of the gnomes were visible anywhere:) – reloading brought the Vizier back (but I learned the layout and the number of troops of the gnome, and I prepared by strategically positioning my units).
The main combat units on the second map are imps)).

Here, on all the maps, there are mentors – in the first half of the first map, there aren't any, but the guards are tough. In the second map, the demon group has a terrible setup. :)
I have the cloak, and the mentor is mine. Finishing this map is just a matter of time now.
In the first mission of the Campaigns, there is no mentor before the transition to the dwarves, but there is one later.
In the second mission of the Campaigns, the main character's mentor is free, and the demons have a guard of a 7th-level creature with a hellish bonus, which can be quite difficult to overcome.
In the third mission, there are 20-30 dark elf bonuses in the garrison.
In the 4th mission, there is a mountain of undead.
In the 5th mission, the guard doesn't seem to be very strong.

Well, I have to replay the 4th mission :( http://c2n.me/400HCyk and right next to it, an elf ran past a blue garrison into the darkness.
It seems that everything went well at the beginning, the neutrals started to break through, I needed to take both the tent and the machine - I took the tent, but the nasty level didn't offer the machine later... A month passed, and I reached level 19, and all I managed to upgrade were demonic skills, and here is this https://c2n.me/400HGOR. The artifacts are bad - a ring of elements, a trident, a lion's collar, a portal scroll (requires 100 mana, but I have a maximum of 60) and a small bag of gold. 14 down horses, 150 demons, and 6 improved imps (before the battle with the elves for the mine, there were 150, but this doesn't change anything). I couldn't get the necromancer's cloak from the dead horseman because a stupid, uncontrollable ballista was shooting at 3 knights, who were blocking the passage for the others, and the spells didn't do much, and there is no witchcraft. I think they will quickly pass through the garrison of 5/10/25/85/250/500/550. It's a pity, it was a good start, but due to the random level, which offered bad things, I will have to replay it + some good artifacts, like the cloak, were not collected. The Castle won't save me. I can't even break through the neutral army in this composition, let alone a strong mage :(
Well, the garrison helped a little, but it's not much :) http://c2n.me/400IqWM
I started again - https://c2n.me/400NhKF it's better :) you can level up (and the artifacts are better).
2nd month, level 23 https://c2n.me/400RctQ, https://c2n.me/400RdHA it's better, if the leveling doesn't work, it's better to replay it)

colleagues, is it worth giving artifacts on the 2nd map? (you can hide it under a spoiler). And also, what is the point of the quest "don't give away 1 artifact"?
raspisnoy Are you talking about the first mission? In the second, you don't have to give anything to anyone.
In the first, you need to give the mage the dragon's gear. He'll be amazed, he'll get cocky, and you need to kill him. He fights strongly, but he guards the last piece of dragon gear. So you need to hit him, because it will unlock the growth of archdemons.
The one who asks for the necklace should be told to go away. The reward isn't worth an archdemon per day, peacefully growing on a demon sitting in the castle.
In my opinion, the effects of the gnome set are disabled for this mission or this half-mission, so the gnome's gear isn't as valuable. And the genie as a reward gives an army and scrolls. Wands are less practical than the staff of a necromancer or a mage; the latter doesn't always appear - I didn't have it, but I wanted it.
Thanks for the advice – giving it away isn't my thing))).
Hmm, almost the entire map can be cleared on Darkness (slow/subdue and berserk with blind) + summoning (wall + phoenix to finish off the dragons quickly) + ... the main force consists of 14 Imps with Blood Dragon Potion)). 42 spell power (with artifacts) makes Chain Lightning and Arcane Blast just free Armageddon. (The only difficult part is the start and until you get the Blood Dragon Potion).
P.S. I just can't break through 3 armies of Water Elementals (I guess I need to go in with thicker units – I'll leave it for later – I've reached level 32 (with chainmail armor)...
In general, I wouldn't have passed it without a mentor. They have armies that are many times larger, and the heroes are not weak; if you fight one in a fair fight, you'll have almost no troops left, and you need to have a dozen or more of these fair fights.
