Yes, it was a quite serious argument. To which it was suggested to respond to the point, rather than making jokes. For a person with such deep knowledge of history, as you positioned yourself, it would not have been difficult. As well as for the other arguments above.

You are wrong! Russia and China are currently doing a good job of preventing America from engaging in direct imperialism. If Russia behaves more aggressively on the international stage, all that the US and the EU can do is bark louder, grumble, and isolate Russia. However, Russia doesn't need this EU. No country in the EU can survive on its own. The EU has approximately 500 million inhabitants, but unemployment is higher than in Russia, and overall development is stagnating. Russia has excellent allies – the BRICS countries. You couldn't ask for better. And Belarus too.
As for Ukraine, there is a possibility of its Schism into Eastern and Western parts. Many residents of the Eastern part love the Russians and want to join Russia. Western Ukrainians, on the other hand, are oriented towards the West. And I will gladly say that I will welcome Eastern Ukrainians in my country, hug each one, and shake their hands. I have an acquaintance. His name is Sergey. He came to Kyiv about thirty years ago (he is now over 40) from Russia. He finished school and university here, got married... Throughout the time I've known him, he always spoke Russian. Deliberately. He never spoke Ukrainian. Also deliberately. He always presented himself as being very Russian, as much as possible. Probably, all Russians in Russia combined were less Russian than he was. Although, when asked what exactly his "Russianness" consisted of, he never gave a clear answer. He would limit himself to vague phrases and immediately change the subject. In general, one day he had problems – he owed money to someone. He had nothing to pay with. And Sergey ran away from his problems as far as possible. To Russia. To his relatives. They welcomed him there, helped him with housing and a job. Everything was as it should be. Just live and be happy. And he lived. And he was happy. But after three weeks, Sergey returned to Kyiv, found the money to pay off his debts, and hasn't left here since. And when asked why he ran away so quickly from his beloved historical homeland, he just waved it off. Later, I was told that, while drunk, he finally confessed why he returned – he couldn't stand the local customs, couldn't adapt to the people around him, and there were other horrors about the unsatisfactory state of the utilities and widespread drunkenness. Especially among young people... And this is in a regional center.
However, my cousin, who has lived in Moscow since 1982, tells a slightly different story. She says that things are not as bad as they are shown in the movies... Who knows.

favio, I mostly agree with the first paragraph. Russia is needed by the EC as a market for its goods, investments, and tourism. And as a supplier of raw materials, we are still the largest supplier of gas to Europe.
As for the second point, I will remain silent for now. The division of countries into two parts, such as Germany or Korea, has only been detrimental to everyone, especially the indigenous peoples of these countries.
Let the Westerners sell themselves to the West, join the EU, and completely destroy their East Slavic historical culture and roots. We don't need them!

Here's how the situation between Ukraine and Russia looks to me, a resident of a country with a population smaller than Moscow:
Ukraine is perhaps the most desirable ally out of all the former Soviet republics. First, it has 46 million people, which is a THIRD of Russia's population. Second, its geographical location and industry are significant. If Belarus is already in a tight grip, then Ukraine is simply destined to be with Russia. The question is how it will be implemented.
From this, the interests of the EU and others are also clear:
First, to hinder Russia (there may not even be any global conspiracies here – it's simply a matter of business).
Second, those same 46 million "Europe-hungry" people, cheap labor, and a solid market.
Third, Ukraine is a "former, fully-fledged part of the USSR" (unlike Moldova or Yugoslavia), and in terms of industrial power, it is on par with Spain and Italy.
Therefore, I am convinced that if Belarus could be "given to Europe," Ukraine never could. And, even in the most negative outcome, with a catastrophic escalation of the current situation, the ultimate outcome will be the forceful annexation of Ukraine by Russia.
Of course, one wants to believe in the will of the people, in the fact that we ourselves decide where to go and with whom to be, but in the end, everything will be as agreed upon by the "elites," and the people will be given the "right" facts to swallow (a nationwide referendum will be held, where 80% of the population will want to join the Customs Union, just as 90% support our president)

Cobra, I was just suggesting a possible outcome of events in the future. By the way, I'm studying to be a historian, and I'm about to graduate, so making such predictions is my area of expertise.
And I didn't offend anyone; I just stated the TRUTH as it is. I have many Ukrainian friends, and I didn't just come up with this; I'm also basing it on their observations. I also have a good acquaintance in Kyiv, a professor of Ukrainian history, and much of what I know about this country is thanks to her.
By the way, gentlemen. I might surprise you, but calling Russia an empire is actually incorrect. We were all taught that in schools, it's written in textbooks, and Marxist professors used to call our country that. Russia has never been an empire! Today, this is a relevant debate among many historians, and I support the view that it was not an empire.

An empire strives to expand through colonization; look at the history of any state, from antiquity to the 19th century. What exactly did Russia colonize? Nothing!
Parts of Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic states, the Caucasus, Kazakhstan, etc., became part of Russia (the USSR) not as colonies! But as a full-fledged (almost) union of socialist republics. Why "almost," because Stalin centralized power.
If we go back to earlier times, the development of Siberia was NOT colonization. We didn't force anyone.
The only exception is Central Asia. And even there, the Russians were forced to defend themselves against Uzbeks, Tajiks, etc. Their endless raids didn't give them peace, so they had to retaliate. But again, the conquered lands in Central Asia were NOT colonies.
Russia has never been an empire! We were all raised and taught the opposite.
It's not for nothing that they say there's the generally accepted history and the real history (c).
