I agree, HL+U is better in all aspects except for real-time gameplay, especially with the current time limit. For example, you can easily plan a game on 6LM10 to last around 12 hours, while JC won't take more than 6-7 hours.
And I won't even mention the balance issues, panics, and CMs. It's just

and there's not much fun to be had there.

it's still fun to play for the sake of anarchy, and I personally like mini-maps...
For competitive play, nothing better than Mirror or fixed maps has been devised yet.
