| Denethor II (2935-3019), the twenty-sixth and last Steward of Gondor, is far more well-known than his predecessor and namesake. Proud and headstrong, he valued the safety of Gondor above all else, but in 3019, he almost betrayed the Stronghold of Minas Tirith to the enemy. Some justify Denethor by claiming that he was not in his right mind at the time due to grief: his eldest son, Boromir, had died, and his youngest, Faramir, was near death. Furthermore, it is argued that Denethor's physical and moral strength was weakened by the constant struggle against Sauron through the Palantír of Minas Tirith. Of course, all of this cannot be ignored, but an unbiased historian cannot help but condemn Denethor for his cowardice. A true ruler does not abandon his people to their fate. Let us not forget that, had it not been for a fortunate coincidence – in the form of the hobbit Peregrin Took, who managed to warn the wizard Gandalf – the despairing Steward would have ascended the funeral pyre along with his youngest son, who could still have been healed (as Lord Elessar did shortly thereafter). |

| A wizard belonging to the Istari, second in power only to Saruman the White. He appeared in Middle-earth around the year 1000 of the Third Age and immediately received Narya from Cirdan the Shipwright – one of the three Elven Rings. For nearly two thousand years, Gandalf thwarted Sauron's schemes and tirelessly fought against the Enemy. He was the one who persuaded the dwarf Thorin Oakenshield to embark on an expedition to the Lonely Mountain and made the dwarves take the hobbit Bilbo Baggins with them. During this expedition (2941), Bilbo found the One Ring; Gandalf did not immediately understand the true nature of the ring found by "Master Baggins," but gradually became convinced of his suspicions, and therefore asked the Rangers of the North to guard the Shire from Sauron's servants. In 3001, at Gandalf's urging, Bilbo Baggins gave the ring to his nephew Frodo, and Gandalf persuaded Frodo to go to Mordor. At the famous Council of Elrond, Gandalf was elected as a Keeper, among others. Together with everyone else, he reached Moria, where he fell, slain by a Balrog; however, he was returned to Middle-earth, already as Gandalf the White, to complete what he had begun. After the end of the War of the Ring, Gandalf left Middle-earth together with Elrond and Galadriel. |

| Curunir, later known as Saruman the White, was one of the Istari, sent by the Lords of the West to fight against Sauron. Saruman was older than the other Istari, arrived in Middle-earth first, and had more dealings with humans. In 2463, the White Council was formed, and Saruman became its head. However, Galadriel wanted Gandalf to be the head of the Council, and Saruman's pride was hurt by this. He didn't forget. Years passed, and the White Wizard's thirst for power grew stronger. In 2759, Saruman occupied Isengard, and in 2953, he declared it his own and turned it into a Fortress. It was in Isengard that the Tower of Orthanc was located, where Saruman settled. He began to study the origin of the Rings of Power, initially to fight Sauron more effectively, but the more Saruman delved into the secret of the Rings, the more he wanted to obtain the One Ring for himself, seize the power of the Ring, and rule the world. Saruman created his own army, breeding a new race of Orcs that were more resilient, stronger, and more intelligent than those from Mordor. In 3018, Saruman's betrayal was revealed by Gandalf the Grey, whom Saruman tried to lure to his side. From that time on, the former head of the White Council stopped hiding his plans. |

| Galadriel. An Elven princess, daughter of the Noldor Finarfin. During the rebellion of Fëanor, she joined those who decided to go to Middle-earth, although she did not make any oaths. She simply could not wait to see the vast expanses and rule in them, so strongly did the words of Fëanor burn in her heart. Initially, Galadriel settled in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, but later moved to Doriath, where she met her future husband, Celeborn. There she also met Melian, from whom she learned much knowledge and wisdom. After the fall of Doriath, according to some legends, Galadriel took refuge on the northwestern coast of Beleriand, but this is not known for certain. The only leader of the rebels who survived in the wars of Beleriand, Galadriel was forbidden to return to Valinor at the end of the First Age, when forgiveness was granted to most of the Noldor. In the Second Age, Galadriel went beyond the Misty Mountains and founded her own principality – Lothlórien, or Lorien. She hid it with a veil, similar to the one that Melian once created to conceal Doriath. And none of Sauron's servants could penetrate into Lorien, so great was the power of Galadriel, multiplied by one of the Three Elven Rings – Nenya. During the War of the Ring, Galadriel had to undergo a severe test, for the hobbit Frodo, the Ring-bearer, offered her the One Ring. The Lady was able to resist the temptation, and therefore, after the end of the War, she was granted forgiveness and permission to return to Valinor. |
