Sure, you can remove it using a mod. In the advanced editor, go to the "music" resources tab and replace all the links in "AdvMapTerrain" with empty links. If you have any heroes on your map with their own music, do the same for them. But in my opinion, it's easier to simply replace those links with links to your track.

That's exactly what I did, but instead of an empty path, I specified the path to my own file from the music folder. My music file is in .ogg format (a custom file, not from the game). As I said, it works intermittently – sometimes the music plays, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't been able to find any pattern, and I haven't really delved into it.

It's located where your game is installed. It's not an archive.
