Of the heroes in the campaigns, Faidaen is definitely the best! For me, my favorite hero isn't just the one with the best (read: strongest) ability. Like many girls, I guess, I look at the hero's avatar, the overall impression he makes, his affiliation with a castle (even if it's a good one, but if he's a hero from, for example, Inferno, that's not for me), and so on.

Many people like Railag, but in my opinion, he's noble to the point of being sickening. He's such a classic type of fallen person (demon, elf?), striving for good, being virtuous and generous. There's not enough genuine substance in him.

What's good about Faidaen? 1. High Elves are my favorite race. 2. He has a decent individual ability. 3. He has the best avatar – he's quite handsome! 4. Poetry – as a person who has learned more than 200 poems in four years of studying philology, I can confidently say that his quatrains are better than many works by famous poets. 5. He's "alive" and "real" – with his weaknesses, without an obvious tendency towards "goodness." He completely won me over with two statements – before the battle with the Overlord, that he might have to kill Isabel, and after the battle, that she should be left in Shio.)))

In the scenario, I played little and only with the High Elves, so for now, I can say that I liked Ilfina with her unicorn, light magic, and tent, and Wingael with his initiative bonus. I've heard (that is, read) about Ossir. Once, I even met him and his archers on a narrow path. To put it mildly, Ossir impressed me. To tell the truth, that company almost wiped out my stronger army. But I've only played as him once myself.

Letos is a very pleasant character – from the Dungeon faction. Vlad is not only interesting because he has the same name as me :) Ossir, due to his racial abilities. Jaleb, Nimue, and Marbas, as well as Grok and Nibros (each is interesting in their own way, but the first two are my favorites). Iris and Axel from the Haven faction (I don't know why, but Iris has very powerful abilities for griffons; if there are many of them, it's a very significant strength). I only played as Erling with the dwarves... so I can't say anything about the heroes of this faction, as I haven't explored it much. I liked Krag from the Stronghold; he reminded me of Krag-Hak from previous installments. I assume that this is indeed him, since the ability remained the same! :)

I have a favorite hero for each faction.
Haven - Frida (Vessel of Elrath) - A powerful specialization.
Inferno - Deleb (Iron Maiden) - He shoots down everyone with machines.
Necropolis - Markel (Lord of the Dead) - He accepts any undead.
Academy - Zehir (Master of Elementals) - Also an excellent specialization.
Dungeon - Railag (Lord of Initiative) - A wonderful specialization.
Sylvan - Faydaen (Ruthless Arrows) - The specialization is average, but I haven't found anything better.
Fortress - Ingvar (Protector) - A good start.
Stronghold - Gotai (Warlord) - You can create many summons.

I also liked: Nicholas (Vampire, originally made), Dark Messiah (Powerful specialization), Alaric (Adept, also excellently made), and I also liked Randall (Respect to the author for the hero!).

Perhaps it's not entirely correct, but for me, a hero's appearance is one of the most important criteria. This is also why I love the campaign heroes so much. Moreover, most of them have the most useful abilities compared to the secondary heroes. By the way, I installed a mod that adds campaign heroes, and now I'm playing and enjoying it. I recommend this mod to you as well. Now, here's a list of my best heroes from different factions (judged by appearance, abilities, and starting conditions):
Haven: Frida, Iris
Inferno: Agrael, Deleb
Necropolis: Markel, Lucretia (I don't like the appearance of other secondary heroes of this faction)
Dungeon: Rilaag (of course!), Synitar
Sylvan: Faidaen, Ossir
Academy: Zehir, Ora
Fortress: Tolgar, Ingvar
Stronghold: Gotai, Tilshek

When I was playing through the campaign as Agrael (playing day and night, even falling asleep in front of the monitor), I once had a dream where I was kidnapped by necromancers, and I threatened them, saying that I knew Agrael and that he would come and beat them all up...)))
But in general, I prefer to play as Inga with the Dwarves.

It's unlikely that the entire hundred will join him ;)

Aranthir seemed like the best hero to me; he summons the virtually invincible monster, Avatar of Death. Excluding the Scything Sword, Death Harbingers, and Deadly Chill, he's incredibly powerful. During the campaign, no one could defeat him, and he didn't even need any buffs :) In the late game, he dominates with Deadly Strike, and paired with a Phoenix under Regeneration or Vampirism, he easily wipes out the enemy army.

No one was appealing; they all seemed scarier than an atomic bomb. The artist clearly went overboard.

Why not? It's not like only the dwarves and orcs have unattractive icons. Although, even among other races, there are some that stand out. As for the campaign icons, they turned out well for everyone except Raileigh (it's a bit pale, and he doesn't look like himself; he looks much better in the hero menu). Zehir's original black lips aren't great either, but in "Tribes of the East," he probably has the best icon. An example of an icon being better than the character's appearance is Aranthir. In the icon, he's a young man, but his in-game appearance is of an older man with a ponytail that doesn't suit him at all. His ability is also great, but a single creature can be easily killed using the methods you mentioned. It's not ideal. Therefore, Raileigh probably has the best icon. Faidaen's drawback is that he's only good against necromancers with a large number of skeletons and zombies (even with the introduction of dark energy, they are summoned more often). And if the enemy has, for example, only one peasant, a powerful volley will be wasted. And considering the specifics of the last campaign in the original game, it's a shame that not all ranged units are affected by this ability.

Many heroes have icons and models that don't match, for example, Faydaen - in the icon, he is tanned and has a stern expression, but in the model, he is pale and has a kind face :) . Zehir has a different hairstyle in the original. And Markel also doesn't look like a Necromancer in the icon - he has too lively a face.

I wouldn't say so. You're forgetting Markel, Kaspar, and another guy who multiplies ghosts on the spot where enemies die.

I completely agree, and Zoltan too. And all Necromancers are strong, except maybe Vlad, who's a bit of a loser, but he was once considered almost a cheater.
