It was about 6-7 years ago when I worked at a commercial firm. One day I saw one of my employees playing Heroes 3, before that I had never seen it and was immediately interested. I installed it on my computer and ran to his office with various questions. I didn't have a computer at home, so I only played at work. After about a year, it got a bit boring because playing against the computer became uninteresting. Then I started going to clubs occasionally and playing on LAN, and interest returned. When I got a computer and the internet, I began searching for various forums and reading them. I read almost all the reports on Heroes League, Heroes Bay (by the way, I learned to play thanks to their reports!) and at first was very surprised by their level of play, but couldn't play with anyone because I couldn't set up the TE they mostly played on. Then I stumbled upon HW, played in Adelaide's tournament and got really into online games, playing for days on end, which my wife strongly disapproved of)).

When I came to HW, I was full of enthusiasm and energy. One player with the nickname SS-D created a thread proposing organized rating games. By that time I had already read up on all these matters and supported the idea, as did many other players. I started harshly criticizing various proposals put forward by SS-D, and we almost had a quarrel over it, as I recall)). When Sergey told me that all I could do was talk, I volunteered to organize the rules. The rules were not written by me. They were based on the rules from HP, and I (and not only me - many players helped, including vbn, Dekontaminator, Evgeny) only adjusted them as we saw fit. SS-D wrote the rating formula, and that's basically how rating games started on HW. That was a bit off-topic, a more expanded answer))

Honestly, we didn't expect such an effect ourselves. Many factors influenced the popularity of Seasonal games. Firstly, at that time there was practically no online play: only the "Seasons" tournament, run by Adelaide twice a year. And the number of users on HW was the largest among all Heroes forums I knew. Secondly, online games are not just entertainment, but also a kind of cybersport, and any sport needs a stimulus. In this case, the fight for first place. Thirdly, it was interesting to share your online achievements with others, which was reflected in reports. I personally love reading beautiful reports and have read hundreds, maybe thousands of them in my life)). Plus, a bit of promotion in other sections of the forum also bore fruit. Players from other resources started visiting HW (particularly from HP as the closest forum in terms of game version). Then Nagan-4 came and brought the Tambov crew with him . We wanted to organize a battle between departments at the university, but it all came down to time - the guys from the other department decided that it was better to play Quake over the network than to move the pieces on the board :/ So nothing like that happened at the university. And the first tournament was at the Nirvana club, I found out about it by chance (a friend told me), I looked at the templates a couple of times and went to play. The first-round draw is memorable. It was summer, I was wearing a Manowar t-shirt, and there was a girl among the participants. Of course, she became the object of increased attention, and someone asked, "Who does she want to play against?" To which she replied, "Anyone, just not him," while noticeably grimacing towards the brutal t-shirt... By a twist of fate, she drew me, and she paid for it. And the t-shirt became a kind of totem, I specifically wore it for all the rounds, even calling it a battle suit.

Surprisingly, the initiator was the same guy who organized the city tournament - Mutant. But after we met the Michurinsk group, Eric became the main organizer, and he invited the guys from Moscow to visit us.

The biggest one was the open tournament in Michurinsk, where we first had to go through qualifying rounds, and then the strongest played against each other, plus Chaos and his student Killa participated in the final. The most memorable moment was the battle with Killa. The pace of the game was not the fastest, plus the Chaos players had more experience with the templates, and in the third week, Bron came to visit me with a decent stack of wyverns. I was playing as a Barbarian, my castle was far away, and the growth in the castle was under threat - I had to move the growth down and give up the castle. When Bron was going to leave on the next turn, I combined my forces and attacked him in the open field, and group wolves brought me the victory - in the first round, they did a good job on the stack of wyverns with the retaliatory strike removed and morale boosted...

It used to be easier to go to a tournament, take a couple of days off, and forget about everything else, playing Heroes almost around the clock. Now, sometimes it's difficult to find time to play online, let alone a real tournament. Well, and laziness probably also plays a role - why bother, take 2-3 days off, when you can play a game at home with almost anyone. But I think that if a good organizer is found, to whom people will go, then it is possible to hold a live tournament even with the current state of the Heroes world.

The first week is about gathering resources and leveling up the hero to take strong objects in the second week, building the castle as much as possible. The pace is often maintained through risk, I noticed that many people don't touch, for example, ranged units, if there is a risk of losing archers, for example - I'd rather lose a few archers, but move on, sometimes I even attack the guard because it "doesn't please" me, even though it doesn't guard anything and you can bypass it without losing a turn.

You're doing a great job with the interviews. I've known both Mikhails (Mizrael and Skorpa) for a long time, but in the interviews, they reveal themselves in a new light.
And also, I think that the "Heroic Stories" project should become broader than originally intended. Yes, there are star players who have achieved great success in tournaments. But a top player and a good storyteller don't always coincide in one person.
