I don't know if there is a "best" unit, but I like upgraded harpies—they never run out of arrows :)))
On tactics, dwarves can be mega-strong during the first week, although they aren't upgraded then. Once, I took an external dwelling of devils on the first week thanks to tactics and dwarves. I gathered elves, upgraded them, surrounded them with dwarves, and it worked out quite well.
My son really loves wolves, but I still haven't understood the point of them. It's clear they have a good hit—or rather two—and the speed is just right, but they still don't seem to rule...
Oh, upgraded shooters too. For Valeska, they can work simply great!!! Moreover, in general and in buildings, they are decent, except for the Hive and Dragon Utopia of course.
Gargoyles are not bad by the way, although I rarely upgraded them. They can be useful on the first week and even the second. They lead the troops while gremlins shoot from behind. Magogs and lizards just don't appeal to me at all. Maybe they're okay, but for some reason I usually only used them as meat :)))

And now the question: who should lead the neutral creatures? From the native units, only gargoyles... Of course, if a secondary hero with snakes appeared, that's good, but gargoyles in the snow without a penalty is one thing, and on their own territory, their speed in battle is not the worst for leading - that's another. That's why I like gargoyles. Although, you know, sometimes they say: "it's bad with you, but even worse without you..." I've just been without gargoyles a few times when starting with the Tower. It's awful. That's the situation...

Definitely a Storm Elemental. A strong and good ranged attacker, and a large number of level 2 units provides a powerful attack, especially with their strength.

By "archers," I mean the crossbowmen from the Castle, IMHO.

Dirty Player, did you even understand what you said about the Tower? Qwerty, in my opinion, Gargoyles are mostly just meat. At the beginning, I think Gremlins are the main force, and Gargoyles should just be used as a last resort to sacrifice, so they don't take damage from Gremlins or to finish off someone somewhere.
