Hmm, gather or find some statistics; I couldn't find any right away... Except for an unclear diagram with no sources, where the distribution was approximately 2 to 1.
However, I can rephrase it as "popular anime male protagonists are mostly young boys" and I'll be right, and this is an even more characteristic indicator than just the sheer number...

In certain genres, such as shojo or maho-shojo, there are more female protagonists. That is, either in something aimed at a female audience, or in something where a predominantly female cast is determined by the genre's specifics. Similarly, there are genres like shonen, in relation to which Ment's statement is quite accurate. In more neutral genres, the situation is more balanced, but I would still say that there is a bias towards male protagonists.

So what? The question is whether it's generally true or not. Even if it isn't (which I doubt), as I said above, male characters are still the most popular, and that's also an indicator.

I don't really believe that there's a significant bias towards female protagonists in anime, and even if there is, it's not that noticeable. Such a bias could invalidate my point about popularity, but as it stands, it remains relevant.

Anyway, I'm not sure why I'm trying to rationally justify why my initial joke is funny; it's a separate matter, but okay.
