Will my mom allow it?
I'm not allowed to bring more than two people home.

My wife will allow it.

But of course, we're not based on a farm.

Ah, well.

Or maybe it’s not a bad thing that I’m not on a farm, where I could proudly keep my noble steed…

So, you decided to take a companion with you too?

No, actually, I was just planning to take a non-combat mule. But thanks for reminding me about that option.

Then you can give him a potion and teach him how to shoot a bow. You'll be able to kite together.

Decide on the grid size as well.

Hmm...
The bottom-right cell is the most maritime cell. There are probably a lot of ports there. I also suspect that the capital is located there. It should be convenient in this regard, to get to/from it.
The bottom-left cell. Close to Ples's homeland. Perhaps it would be logical for him to settle there.
The top cell. Close to the merchants, so you can organize more convenient trade. Well... In the future.
I'm for the bottom-right cell. Especially if the capital is indeed there.

I would establish my base in the north. This way, the only dangerous neighbor would be Deicia. The Jarls are unlikely to be interested in us. However, on other positions, there is a potential threat in the form of Shinsekai, which may want to seize not only the Nilam territories but also other coastal provinces. Aggression from Jagensdorf is also possible, but not likely at the beginning of the game.

Well, since we don't have our own territory yet, I wouldn't worry too much about external aggression (because that would also be aggression towards Celia. And if Celia falls, it won't really matter to us which cell we're in inside it, it'll be a lost cause anyway). But maybe it's worth considering somehow.

I was actually referring to aggression towards Celia. But I wouldn't say that her fall will necessarily be a disaster for us. Some might turn a blind eye to the actions of mercenaries. (The Jarls and possibly Deicia with Jagensdorf). And we ourselves might help someone conquer their native lands. Especially if we see that Celia is losing the war. And Shinshekai, as a potential aggressor, is bad because they are unlikely to allow the presence of mercenaries (or any foreigners at all) on their "territory."

Okay. In principle, the North is also a good option, as it also offers a decent amount of naval bases. And merchants.

Who would do such a thing?

Mercenaries...
