Try not to behave or look like a Japanese person if you are not Japanese, and do not act like a resident of Japan if you don't live in Japan. Be yourself; don't be ashamed of your country just because it isn't Japan.
Anime features fictional characters. If you declare that you've taken one of these characters as a husband/wife, people will think badly of you and consider it strange.
Phew, everything is fine, I took Luke Skywalker as my husband, he's not anime, I'm normal.
And if you came up with a character yourself to be your wife, does that count as anime?

Don't argue over anime characters. Everyone has their favorite characters. The fandom is huge. Respect other people and their opinions.

Cosplay isn't just combining things you usually wear with anime merchandise. If you put on an item from some anime that you bought for a lot of money in an anime store, that's not cosplay yet. Do you want to cosplay? Then give yourself to it wholeheartedly, without reservation, to recreate what you saw on the screen. Don't just wear things that resemble the clothes of an anime character. Either all or nothing. And yes, everything has its place, and cosplay does too (they might not understand you at school).
If I hadn't lost motivation over the years due to my digestive issues and continued to gain weight, I could already be cosplaying my favorite male hero, and no one would even suspect a thing
