3. Defending Honor

An aristocrat from Astkirken wants to hire an experienced warrior to defend his honor in a personal duel against his offender.
Payment: 10 gold coins

— Uh, money upfront...

— Alright, that’s enough, — Captain Weymouth interrupted, — we’ve talked it over, now let’s get down to business. We’re short on manpower right now, so I already have an assignment for you: you need to find the bandits hiding in the forests north of the city and harassing the peasants. You can capture them, or you can eliminate them – whatever works. I’m giving you three months for this; Helmut, you’re in charge. If you do a good job on this assignment, I’ll give you a bonus; if you don’t, you’ll be cleaning the latrines until the end of the year.

The first of the described tasks puzzled the warrior and, for a split second, made her doubt the purpose of the guild. It seemed to her that it mostly consisted of warriors, not explorers. However, the second and third tasks turned out to be closer to what she expected.
After some thought, Abigail concluded that the task of transporting cargo, despite having the most modest reward on the list, suited her best. Having informed them of her interest in this job, she decided to take a short walk around the city, first asking her new companions where it would be best to find a place to stay in Silvergarde.

-- Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding, of course, -- Lex patted his pockets, rummaged around, and searched. -- Hmm. It seems I'm short. I left some money at the tavern. Would you like to take a walk? Or can you wait for me here? I won't be long.

- Sir, one question, if you don't mind. I'm new to the squad and don't know much about these places. Wouldn't someone else be better suited for this?

How long does it take to travel one cell?

I have a good eye, and you're the best fit for this job among everyone else.

— Of course, of course, I won't go anywhere from here.

Here, everyone is either a convict or mentally deficient.

Interesting. Come, I'll show it to you, and I'll talk to it.

— Aha, I see. — The captain of the city guard made some notes, and then began examining Anusder's belongings. — Where did you get the sword, and can you use it? If so, where did you learn? Are the knives the remnants of a collection? Where did you get each of them? What are these scribbles? — The last question, of course, referred to the diary. — Where did you get the money — from "mercenary work"? What was your last job, who paid you, and how much?
