— Aha, I see. — The captain of the city guard made some notes, and then began examining Anusder's belongings. — Where did you get the sword, and can you use it? If so, where did you learn? Are the knives the remnants of a collection? Where did you get each of them? What are these scribbles? — The last question, of course, referred to the diary. — Where did you get the money — from "mercenary work"? What was your last job, who paid you, and how much?
— Well, you're really grilling me, commander. I'd have to think back to remember everything, — Anusder pretended to ponder and scratched his beard. — I bought the sword a while back, to defend myself from street thugs. My father taught me how to use it. This one was for "gifts," a bankrupt merchant sold it to me, or maybe he was an aristocrat... I definitely remember this kitchen knife; a cook gave it to me as compensation for me getting poisoned by his food. The boot knife... hmm, I think I traded it for a bottle of booze with a drunk hunter. Or maybe it was a hunting knife that I later sold to some idiot from Liathria... hmm, I can't really remember. And this is my deceased father's diary. He went on a trip in his old age and wrote all sorts of nonsense; I still can't understand it. He said he could see the future and wrote everything down in the diary. I carry it with me; maybe someone smart will decipher it. Some old men paid me; they got lost near the previous town I was in and were looking for the way. I guided them.
