By the mid-17th century, Russia, which had already annexed most of Siberia, reached the shores of the Sea of Okhotsk. Subsequently, the first meeting between Russians and one of the Japanese sailors who had survived a shipwreck, named Denbei, took place. Thus, around 1701, Russia learned about the existence of a country called Japan. Denbei was brought to Moscow and granted an audience with Peter I, after which, in 1705, Peter ordered the opening of a Japanese language school in St. Petersburg, and appointed Denbei as its teacher. After this, expeditions were organized at the state level to search for a sea route to Japan, and in 1739, the ships of Spanberg and Walton approached the shores of the Rikuzen and Awa provinces. The silver coins received from the Russians by the local population were delivered to the bakufu, which in turn consulted with the Dutch living in Japan. They reported the place where these coins were minted, and thus Japan also learned about the existence of the country "Orkosia" (Russia) to the north of it.
