Elves don't have the best ability; it's good that they always deal double damage, but it often fails with an upgraded luck stat. The best ability belongs to mages.

It seems to me that your assessment is somewhat biased. You can't cast all spells in battle, and where will you get the attack from? The ultimate ability won't give the mage that much, especially compared to self-made artifacts, and it can't compete with constant disarm and skipping a turn; by that time, the army is already large.
