The enemy hero lost all of his creatures. You received credit for them. I think that's how it should be... Seriously, you defeated his army, scattered them across the forests and fields, killed whoever you found, and so on. You got experience for it, everything is fair.
But if something like that happened during a ransom, then yes, that would be unpleasant.
