OpenEnroth

Edit Summary: Internal links converted to wiki links (indexed for backlinks).

OpenEnroth is an open-source reimplementation of the engine of Might and Magic VI, VII and VIII, meant to let the original games run on modern platforms[1]. It uses the original game data, so a copy of the game is needed[1]. As of October 2026 only Might and Magic VII is playable, and only nightly builds are available[1][1].

History

  • The roots go back to "MM 6/7/8 Total Remake", which Nomad announced on the Celestial Heavens forum on 12 April 2010 as a reconstruction of the MM7 engine[1].
  • The GitHub repository, created on 4 December 2016, was formerly gp-alex/world-of-might-and-magic; that address now resolves to OpenEnroth/OpenEnroth[1][1]. A GamingOnLinux reader recalled in 2023 that the project "used to be called world-of-might-and-magic" and had been "somewhat dead-ish"[1].
  • In January 2023 GamingOnLinux covered it as "nowhere near finished yet with only Might and Magic 7 playable" but regularly receiving contributions[1]. The same month it was added to FreeBSD ports as games/openenroth[1].
  • The most active contributors by commit count are captainurist, pskelton, Nik-RE-dev, botanicvelious, Gerark and gp-alex[1].

Technology and platforms

  • Written in C++ and licensed under the LGPL 3.0[1].
  • Supported on Windows, Linux (as a Flatpak), macOS and, experimentally, Android[1].
  • It needs at least the ANIMS, DATA, MUSIC and SOUNDS folders of the game; the README points to the GOG release of MM7[1].

Roadmap

MilestoneGoal
v0.1vanilla MM7 experience, first public release[1]
v0.2MM7 "as we want it to be"[1]
v0.3support for MM6[1]
v1.0support for MM8[1]
v1.1modding support and the first officially supported mod[1]

The first stable release is tracked as the v0.1 milestone[1][1].

Community

The repository had more than 860 stars on GitHub in October 2026 and was still being updated that month; the project has its own Discord server, linked from the README[1][1].
