Thank you for your response! The issue is that I don't see any pattern – all maps crash the game. Both small and large maps, as well as maps from the internet and the default maps, crash. Approximately 30% of the maps load, while 70% do not. I've read through the sections here about the problems that other people have experienced, but I haven't found anything that matches this specific issue.

Perhaps you have many mods, and the maps are conflicting with them? Or they contain mods themselves and are conflicting with each other...

Colleagues, regarding running the game in a window: google the program DXWnd — it's simply an epic tool with hundreds of settings (though you'll have to spend some time configuring it and figuring out how it works). You can run Heroes in a window, and most importantly! — the game will remain active even while in the background if you switch to a browser, for example, while the computer is taking its long turns in-game.
Usually, games pause if you Alt+Tab to another window.
(I'm writing this post right now, and there, in the background beyond the browser, the computer in Heroes is making its moves on a huge map!)

There is also a program called D3DWindower — but it isn't as flexible; it's very simple and has own unfixable/unconfigurable glitches.

I solved the problem with Heroes V – I deleted all the mods and moved all the maps to a separate folder, then copied them one by one from that folder to the game's "Maps" folder. I couldn't pinpoint which specific maps were causing the issue, but now several maps that previously wouldn't launch are working properly.
