The task says to find a mage who is also fighting the demons... But his city is not on the map, neither in the surface world nor underground... What should I do? :confused:

I just completed this mission (thanks for the tip, Raja_Rakshasa). Nicholas is not visible on the map; you need to go to the lower right corner, through the red gate.

That can't be. In this mission, you shouldn't get into battles, but quietly go underground to the exit and kill only 1 last garrison (not very large). After that, an enemy hero will come, but he won't have such a huge army as you say. You probably did everything too slowly, and he had time to gather monsters.
And then it will be a real nightmare in the Elven campaign...
