That can't be. In this mission, you shouldn't get involved in battles, but quietly go underground to the exit and kill only the last, not very large, garrison. After that, an enemy hero will come, but he won't have such a huge army as you say. You probably did everything too slowly, and he had time to gather monsters.

I just completed this mission (thanks for the tip, Raja_Rakshasa). Nicholas is not visible on the map; you need to go to the lower right corner, through the red gate.

And in general, the game tells you everything you need to do in the cutscenes.
