Heroes 1 and 2 don't run on Windows 10
The first part crashes immediately upon launch, displaying an error message and closing the program.
The second part freezes, a black window covers everything, even the taskbar.
I have to restart my computer.
What can I do to get these games running?
I've asked in various VK groups, but no one has answered.

Well, I don't know, on my laptop with a 64-bit system and Windows 10, the second game runs perfectly fine. I had some trouble installing the third game, but it worked with compatibility mode.

Well I dunno, on a x64 laptop with Windows 10, the second one works without any problems at all. Struggled a bit to install the third one, but it worked with compatibility settings.

I also have a x64 laptop with Windows 10, but I just can't get clean SoD installed on it; please tell me your compatibility settings:smile45:

Hello! I have been playing Heroes 1 and 2 for many years in the "Classic Edition. Heroes of Might and Magic. Platinum Edition" (copyright holder Buka, 2012, all 3 parts on one disc) on Windows 7 Ultimate. When I switched to Windows 10, I found that Heroes 1 doesn't launch at all, no matter what tricks I try, such as editing the shortcut in every possible way and using DxWnd (it seems to me that this software doesn't work at all in new operating systems!), and Heroes 2 only launches in a window with distorted graphics and runs with many crashes. Yes, I can buy it from GoG.com, where they promise compatibility with Windows 10, but there is no support for the Russian language, and I would really like to play in Russian (I can also play in English, but since I have to use a thick dictionary and look up every word for a long time, it's not as convenient). ZoG asked one of its authors about the translation, and I'm waiting for an answer. What is already known is somewhat alarming: the translation is based on unlicensed versions, the word "necromancer" is missing, and there may be some more serious issues. I would like to contact an expert to discuss one of two possibilities:
1. Any way to launch Heroes 1 and 2 from Buka's Platinum Edition under Windows 10.
2. Transferring some files from the Platinum Edition disc to the GoG version to implement Buka's Russian translation there.

Is the Windows version of the first Heroes game different from the DOS version? I have the "Golden Collection" from Buka, and the first and second games run fine using DxWnd. Just make sure to uncheck the "Run in Window" option.

I have the same version as you, but running it in DxWnd on Windows 10 is impossible: after launching it in every conceivable way, it's impossible to select any game; only the main program window appears. The description doesn't match reality at all, as the screenshots show Russian menus, but in reality, it's pure English. Nevertheless, the author of the translation contacted me and sent me the source code for a program that might be able to launch Heroes 1 and 2. For some unknown reason, he doesn't want to create a translation based on the Bukovsky version, even though I offered him a good sum for this work. When will those legendary classic games, including those from Ubisoft, be re-released for modern hardware and modern Windows, just like Microsoft did with Age of Empires I?

If the topic is still relevant, I can share my experience on how I managed to get Heroes of Might and Magic II working on Windows 7 x64 without any workarounds like virtual machines or DxWnd.

:eek: But we're not talking about Windows 7 x64! :confused: There are no problems with these games under Windows 7 x64! We're only talking about Windows 10, and only in connection with the fact that Windows 10 does not support hardware protection for games that are launched from a disc using DRM or StarForce!
