It seems like FB-8 has just ended, the players have put their horses back in the stables, and Maretti is basking in his glory, but then... New heroes decided to challenge the champion and prove their strength in battles against him and other prize winners in the next final battle; in short, OFB-9 tournament is officially open.:smile03:

I. Regulations and deadlines

The qualifying tournament will be held using a "Swiss" system.

The tournament starts on April 20, 2015; registration ends on April 19, 2015 inclusive.

Each round lasts two weeks – matches will be scheduled without regard to opinions or authority (the only exception is CNG-15 in Volgograd).
Players can agree on a convenient time for themselves, but if they cannot reach an agreement, the critical time for the game is Saturday night - Sunday at 9:00 PM Moscow time - the game must last at least 5 hours (if it was not possible to play in one go, then in the second week - at least 7 hours)thus, in order to resolve the issue of awarding points, players must play at least 12 hours!!!, so I recommend contacting your opponent immediately after the draw and making arrangements; if you fail to do so, write to the organizer or judges; if you don't write, I assume that everything is fine with you and, in case of a controversial situation, I will proceed based on this. In case one player does not show up at the agreed time, the other player must write to the organizer or one of the judges, and when submitting the results, this will be the main argument.
This point is non-negotiable.

OFB will consist of 9 rounds; preliminarily, 7 players advance to the final stage, but under certain circumstances (such as tied places, a player who qualified for FB withdrawing, etc.), the host has the right to expand this list (has the right – does not mean he will necessarily do so – for particularly pedantic demagogues :) ).

The organizers reserve the right to change these regulations.

II. Rules and templates.

1. By default, games are played according to /topic/10593/
2. By default, the game version is SoD 3.2 (4.0) + HD mod latest version; by mutual agreement, WoG, HotA, or any other HOMM3 version can be used.
Games using HW rules mods are only allowed with mutual consent.
3. The template is chosen in turn from a list of 9 templates: 2SM4d(3), Balance, skirmish - standard (played with random castles at 200% difficulty with the HW_rules_mod patch, you can play mirror matches if both players want, Jebus cross, Mini-Nostalgia, Diamond, 8mm6a, 6LM10a, and Spider. The player marked in red in the table chooses the template first (in this case, the player indicated as number 1 in the pair plays in red).
4. Castle selection... In this tournament, castle selection will be "optional," meaning there is no specific order – you want to play Necropolis? Please do so; you want to play Dungeon? Be my guest, BUT… you cannot play the same castle more than twice in the tournament (if this rule is violated, the match will be forfeited; upon recurrence, disqualification).
The red player starts choosing the castle. If the players want to play with the same castles, they must agree on who will play which one; if they fail to reach an agreement, they will play with random heroes.
This point is non-negotiable; if it doesn't suit you, don't play.
5. The winning player, before the end of the round deadline, must submit a report, and the losing player must confirm it - those who fail to comply with this rule will not be allowed to participate in the draw for the next round.
6. 2 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss.
Winners are determined by the number of points scored. In case of a tie, additional criteria apply:
1) Buchholz coefficient
2) Head-to-head result
7. Draws are prohibited in the last round!!!

III. Organizational issues
1. This is an official, regular tournament.
2. The tournament is held according to the Rules for organizing, conducting, and participating in tournaments.
3. Tournament host: zloy_romantik (296524052), Palach HP (426409548) – organizational matters.
Tournament judge: Dirty_Player (ICQ 408722873) and Pit for LM (471401475)
4. For each played match, participants must submit a report and confirmation.
5. Saves from all matches must be saved until the end of the tournament and submitted upon request from the tournament hosts or any member of the AC (Arbitration Committee).
6. If controversial situations arise, please discuss them outside the forum. To resolve this, contact the host or judge in ICQ and provide daily saves, ICQ logs, and other necessary information. Appeals against decisions can and should be filed with the AC, not by starting arguments - I will delete such posts and punish offenders (Palach is co-host for a reason; he definitely has an axe :D ).
7. All games in the tournament count towards the seasonal rating. Reports and confirmations are posted in this thread and will be copied to the "Reports of online games and their confirmations" thread. Therefore, there is no need to duplicate reports in the season ranking.
8. The final stage of the tournament will be held using a round-robin system.

IV. Participants
1. Experienced players from HW and other gaming resources are invited to participate in the tournament.
2. Newcomers who have shown good results are allowed (applications will be considered individually).
3. Players who have just registered are not allowed to participate in the tournament (exception – active players from other gaming resources; applications will be considered individually).
4. Players with permanent bans are not allowed to participate in the tournament. If any player receives a permanent ban during the tournament, they will be disqualified, and their results will be annulled.
5. Applications from undisciplined players who repeatedly "ignored" tournaments may be rejected.
6. Organizers reserve the right to refuse participation in the tournament to a user without publicly explaining the reasons.
7. Winners and 2nd/3rd place winners of FB-7 tournament are NOT eligible for selection (Maretti, Aive, and Stinger).
8. Attention all participants. Those who have unconfirmed reports that are one month or older at the start of the tournament will not be admitted. Please check current tournaments and the season ranking for outstanding debts!

Well, I think that's it; saddle up, and may the strongest win :smile13:

Wait, don't rush to upload and enable it yet... Kalababa's example doesn't teach anything... testing is needed first, and only then tournament practice.

Moreover, there are some minor differences from the VT version of h3dm1, seemingly trivial at first glance, but you never know...

For example, the "Mini-Nosta Syndrome" is clearly evident — many quests at the starting respawn. The reason is likely the same — mass treasure zones within 2 turns' travel.

Also, in the treasure zones, the end-point objects are a village + a teleport, rather than 2 teleports (as in VT). The reason is that in VT there was no technical capability to place a village + a teleport (since villages were replaced with teleports), and in SoD I didn't know that you could place 2 teleports (I've since learned). The second reason is to expand the number of towns for magic building; in VT this is not critical due to the guild rebuilding, but in SoD there is a risk of losing control and ending up in a stalemate with running around in circles.

A possible side effect is a chain takeover of towns (capture a town, buy a hero, transfer the army, capture the next town with him, and so on). This results in more aggressive gameplay. Whereas in VT, it usually takes 3-4 days on the road to walk to the opponent. Who knows which is better.

Also, the zone sizes have been slightly adjusted — the starting respawn and secondary zones have been slightly reduced, while the treasure zones have been slightly increased on the contrary. During testing, the treasure zones seemed somewhat too sparse, so I increased them. In VT, the treasure zones seemed richer, although maybe my memory is failing me.

A possible side effect — a shortage of gold for the initial expansion. Needs testing. Although in VT there was an excess of gold, necessary for ordering rewards at the Griffin Conservatory / Dragon Fly Hive, so maybe the gold amount is fine.

Another observed thing — in VT, the starting respawn is almost always strictly in the center of the map, while in SoD it is sometimes shifted towards the edge. I don't know why, the zone generator hasn't changed. In particular, because of this, treasure zones sometimes appear in the center of the map, which looks funny; as for the impact on gameplay — I don't know.

In summary — it is possible and necessary to play, complaints are accepted, both on the listed points and on anything else you find. I am especially interested in the opinion of those who played the VT version of h3dm1 and can provide a reasoned comparison.

The only thing is that it seems you can't play with identical heroes.
You cannot play with identical ones. Therefore, blue chooses their hero first, and red chooses second. And there is bargaining over color.

When playing as Dungeon or Necropolis, it is recommended to ban starting with Warlock/Galtran, as the bids for the blue color will be indecent; it's better to choose from the remaining heroes.

In the future, Wizard threatens to make an identical hero pool, meaning not only the starting heroes but the entire chain of heroes purchased from the tavern will be identical. But it's unclear when that will happen.

I don't really want to include an untested template in one of the most important online tournaments, especially since people will be in unequal conditions – some already know the template, but most don't. I'm currently considering an alternative that I've been thinking about after requests to add 8xM and Anarchy – to add a clause to the rules stating that players can play any template by mutual agreement, since in this tournament, unlike the previous one, there is no strict adherence to templates, so this option is viable.
It definitely needs to be tested, but a slot for it can be reserved.
Although, in principle, the template has been tested for a long time; it just needs to be slightly adjusted for the SOD (Strategic Options and Difficulties).

Regarding the starting funds: It's noticeably less than in WoTA (War of the Ancients), but it doesn't have a significant impact on the initial development. In WoTA, on the contrary, I think there was too much.
The treasures, if nothing has been changed in them, should be the same. I haven't noticed any significant difference yet.
Chain-grabbing cities – don't play on fast speeds.
What is not yet clear whether it is good or bad is the reduced strength of the teleport guards. Stinger managed to visit even with strong guards

Stinger managed to visit even with strong guards.

That's why in Warlords with experienced creatures, bursting into the third week is a common occurrence, as by that time, your starting stack of units at levels 1-2 becomes comparable in stats to units at levels 3-4.

This won't work in Shades of Darkness, so I think reducing the strength of teleport guards is quite logical.

Thanks, Vik!
Please send the template for testing.
Regarding the cities, having 4 of them was fine; it seems like having too many now might be an issue. Constantly capturing cities in a loop can drag out the game.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking.
The dungeons, if you haven't tweaked anything in them, should be the same. I haven't noticed any major differences yet.
I tweaked the size values of the zones in the template so that it would feel like it did in Warlords. If it worked out, that's good.
Chain-capturing cities – it's not a strategy for fast games.
That's true, the recommended road speed is medium.
What's unclear whether it's good or bad is the reduced strength of the teleport guards. Stinger managed to visit even with strong guards.
That was accidental; I copied it from the dungeon entrance guards out of habit. If it's too low, I can increase it.

That's why Warlords has experience for creatures – rushing into dungeons on turn 116-117 is common because by that point, your starting stack of units at level 1-2 becomes comparable to units at level 3-4 in terms of stats.

This won't work in SoD, so I think reducing the strength of the teleport guards is quite logical.
Maybe you're right...

Thank you, Vikk!
Please send the template for testing.
Regarding the cities, 4 was a good number; now, it might feel like there are too many. Capturing cities in a circle endlessly drags out the game.
I thought about that, but see the argument about control – without it, running around in a circle risks dragging the game out even more, and this way, the chances of building a Dragon Domain are higher, and there are more strategic points for catching "runners."

I asked Wizard to somehow programmatically solve this problem, to check guilds for the presence of control, and if there isn't any, add it to one of the castles. Let's see what happens.

I don't know. That's a question for Wizard.

Is it compatible with HOTA?
Everything is fine. Maybe problems will be discovered later, but ideally, there shouldn't be any.
