Hello, dear forum members! Recently, I became interested in "hacking" old games, specifically King's Bounty 2 (it all started with simple cheating of authority and magic power xD). And recently, I wrote a small program designed to "hack" this very KB2, or rather, to extract and edit game graphics, which are located in files with the .PIC extension. Currently, the second version of the program is ready (it was released yesterday), and it includes some additional features for viewing and saving graphics.
Features:
Small size (only 15 KB)
Ability to view and modify images in King's Bounty 2
Ability to save an image from King's Bounty 2
Ability to quickly save a group of images from King's Bounty
Ability to copy an image from King's Bounty 2 to the clipboard
Ability to replace a King's Bounty 2 image with an image from a file
Ability to replace a King's Bounty 2 image with an image from the clipboard
However, for now, the program only supports viewing/replacing images with a size of 96x60, but in the future, I plan to add support for other resolutions (in KB2, most images are 96x60). But even with this version of the program, you can change the images of units, tiles, wizards, sorceresses, castles, cities, etc. Download: The program itself The palette
How to use the program: I tried to make the program as simple as possible. First, I want to say that one PIC file contains several game images (for example, army0.pic contains 5 unit images). Each of these images is located in a specific place in the PIC file and, you can say, has its own specific number in this file. To view (and, if desired, save) an image from a PIC file, you need to click on the Open Viewer button, and a "PIC viewer" window will appear. It consists of 1 text field and 2 buttons - Load PIC and Save Image. The text field contains the number of the image in the PIC file. By changing it, you change the image for viewing (that is, if it contains 0, you are viewing the first image, if 1, the second, and so on). First, click on Load PIC and select the file you want to view. Now you can change the number in the text field and find the image you need. When you find it, you can safely click Save Image and choose the PNG file where you want to save the image.
Now about how to change a game texture. For example, you want to replace the dragon image with another one. Using the Viewer, you find out in which file and under what number the dragon image is located - in the file army4.pic, under number 9. Now you prepare a PNG file of the image that you want to replace the dragon image with. Here is a small nuance. PIC files can only store certain colors, so, in order for your texture to be displayed correctly in the game, you must draw it using only these colors. The list is given below, but you can also download an image with them using the link provided above (download the palette). So, you have prepared your texture, saving it to a file, let's say, newdragon.png. Now you open Pic Editor. As you can see, there is the same text field as in Pic Viewer. And it also refers to the image number in the file. But in this case, it means the number of the image that you want to replace. Also, there is a Load Image button, with which you can load your texture into the program. Click it and select your file (in this example, newdragon.png). Now, you need to enter the number of the image you want to replace in the text field. Remember that the dragon image is located in the file army4.pic under number 9. So, enter 9 in the field. Now click Save to Pic and select the file army4.pic. That's it, the image has been replaced. Also, instead of clicking Load Image, you can click on the Clipboard button, and then the image for replacement will be taken from your clipboard.
