Posts from Town Points – Is development becoming too formulaic?

Yesterday, I visited a friend who has a pirated copy of Heroes... Not the Alpha version, but the one that's been circulating online. I played it, and I realized that the point system is actually very good! I enjoyed it, and now I'm eagerly waiting for Friday... In general, don't worry, the points aren't limited.

I liked the new system; it added some variety to the game. And the fact that you can't build dragons in the first week, well, who cares?:D What difference does it make? If not in the first week, then you'll build them in the second... In Heroes of Might and Magic 3, sometimes people built angels, hydras, and often phoenixes. But this happened rarely.

This system reminds me of the town points from Age of Empires 3... The meaning is roughly the same.

I definitely like the current system more than the previous ones. At least because it reduces the role of randomness in the distribution of resources. And the choice hasn't become smaller; on the contrary, the Capitol now requires only a city hall and a city level of 15, and dragons, among all other units, only require Raiders and a city level of 15. And you decide what to build at that level. The Mage Guild doesn't require any level at all; if you have the resources and the hero is leveled up, you can build it to level 5 in the first week.

When there's no ore and all buildings require it. And starting from the next turn, they require wood. But that's exactly what one building is missing.

In my opinion, the new system is more flexible because you can customize the buildings based on the available town points, including those that require fewer resources. In Heroes of Might and Magic III, there was simply a fixed list of buildings.

Nival achieved something with this system that no other company could have: they eliminated the "rush" strategy. Whether to play aggressively or not is up to the player, not some guys in an office.

Instead of making such loud statements about using a rush strategy, you might as well say that you'll be using a hit-and-run tactic.
