The film begins with the gamer Philip (Sergei Bezrukov in makeup as a fat, unshaven man) playing a single-player game. He's not a very good player, so he practices against the AI. The room is a complete mess, with dirty dishes on the computer desk and a pile of beer bottles under the table. Philip practices for hours, dedicating all his time to improving his skills. Let's leave the question of his financial income unanswered (maybe his dad lives in Finland). Then comes the moment when he becomes so immersed in the virtual world that he actually ends up there, while his physical body falls into a coma.
In the hospital, an old Jewish doctor named Adam Abramovich, simply Abramych, becomes Philip's attending physician (Valentin Gaft, with makeup and hairstyle like in the film "12," would be perfect for this role).
But Philip is in no hurry to return from his coma. A young nurse, Varya (ideally, Charlize Theron from about 10 years ago, but that would significantly increase the film's budget, so let's have Boyarskaya play the role; you can't avoid her these days), takes care of him. She falls in love with Philip and also tries unsuccessfully to bring him out of his coma. Varya learns by chance that Abramych has a drug called nanometyllichloride, which could help Philip. In exchange for the nanometyllichloride, Abramych demands that Varya live with him. Varya agrees to this, even though it disgusts her, for the sake of the man she loves. But then, unexpectedly, Varya's twin sister, Sveta, returns from a sex tour in the Emirates. Varya easily convinces Sveta to switch places. Abramych doesn't notice the switch, and Varya thus preserves her honor. Philip returns from his virtual dreams to the real world, where Varya lives with him in the same apartment. The empty bottles and dirty dishes disappear, and order is restored in the apartment. But the relationship with Philip is strained. Philip continues to live his old life, ignoring Varya. Also, Philip briefly falls into a coma twice, and Varya brings him out of it each time using nanometyllichloride. When the supply of the drug runs out, Varya calls her sister, but it turns out that Sveta flew to the Emirates that day. Varya is disgusted, but she has to sacrifice her honor and have an affair with Abramych. This time, when Philip comes out of the coma, he kicks Varya out, saying that he is happier in the virtual world. Heartbroken, Varya takes half a pack of nanometyllichloride and dies.
Final scene:
Philip realizes that he cannot live without Varya and prepares to take the remaining drug. At that time, the following events occur in the morgue where Varya's body is: the morgue pathologist, who was about to perform an autopsy on her, notices signs of life. He revives her, and Varya asks the doctor for a phone to call Philip.
While Philip is holding a handful of pills, the phone rings. He wonders what to do first: swallow the pills or answer the phone.
Credits roll.
There is another possible ending. Philip, learning that Varya is dead, in a state of affect, climbs to the top of the city's tallest skyscraper, where he is shot down by several Mi-8 helicopters
