Yes, I've already managed to play all the games from my childhood several times using DOSBox. My favorite DOS game is Lemmings. It's simply a brilliant creation! Maximum effect achieved with minimal means. The game is so perfect that there's no need to improve the graphics. I recommend everyone to play it, despite its age; it's a classic, and I haven't seen any other games in that genre.

At one time, I wondered: why, back then, in the early nineties, with such limited implementation capabilities, did they release so many truly brilliant games that you can still enjoy playing today? And now, games are released by the thousands, and there's so much garbage, very rarely are outstanding games released. I think it's simply a matter of demand. Back then, computers were not available to everyone; they were mostly in companies, and having a computer at home was considered an incredible luxury. So, those who had access to computers were usually intellectual people, and accordingly, intellectual games were released for them. Now, the calculation is based on the dumb majority. It's a pity, especially for the quest genre, which has almost died out.

I can post a list of my favorite games from that time.

- Lemmings
- Quests from Lucas Arts, especially the Monkey Island series up to part 3, The Dig, Indiana Jones, Loom.
- King's Bounty (the progenitor of the Heroes series, by the way)
- Morpheus

From later games, most of which everyone probably played:
- Warcraft II (in my opinion, 3D graphics ruined the genre)

- Petya and Vasily Ivanovich (especially part 3)

I completely agree with you – both with the assessment of the situation and with its main causes! In general, there is also an objective difficulty: today it is almost impossible to come up with something completely original, unlike dozens and hundreds of other existing games; there probably can't be any new genres anymore, and in the old ones, there are their undeniable leaders, which are impossible to surpass, and to create something worse than them – what's the point?
The same goes for "Heroes 3". I am happy with them, and I don't expect anyone to "reinvent the wheel" in this genre.

I also have my own list of favorite "old" games (from memory): Lost Vikings 1, 2, Tomb Raider 1-4 (I haven't played the latest versions, so I can't evaluate them), Duke Nukem 3D, Resident Evil 3... and many others that I can't remember right now.
