I see this topic has been abandoned for a while, which is a shame. :(
Oh well, maybe someone will read this.
Everyone here talks about parties consisting of 5 people, and with a dragon on top of that. In MM8, 3DO finally managed to implement difficulty through an original idea – completing the game with 1 or 5 characters. But for some reason, everyone plays on very easy.
Anyway, while rummaging through old discs recently, I found MM8 and decided to play through it (probably for the 10th time or more), but this time with 2, maximum 3 characters (I'll say right away, I didn't have enough patience).
So, my choice immediately fell on the mage (I don't believe in warriors =)), specifically one who can become a Grand Master of magic. Only Clerics and Necromancers can do that. I chose the Necromancer, of course, because elemental magic is closer to me than mental. Plus, mental magic has lower damage, and I needed a mage who was a pure damage dealer.
Then came the moment to choose an element (I discarded darkness immediately, as it consumes TOO much mana and you need to be a Master for mass nukes (to be honest, even those mass nukes wouldn't have saved me, because until I can transform into a Lich, I can forget about constant use of darkness magic due to low MP)). So, my choice was: fire.
Quickly clearing the islands, I assembled the party I intended to use to beat the game:
Necromancer – myself, fire mage + alchemist
Necromancer – a pre-made level 15 character who joins immediately in Shadow Peak. Since he is already a master of earth, I decided his specialization would be an earth mage. But since I can't live without flight, I had to make him a master of air as well, and later a Grand Master of water)
Minotaur – lives in Raven's Shore, where there is a "test"; I assigned him a two-handed greataxe for life.
The game went successfully and quite easily, until I began to feel a shortage of finances. As hard as it was for me, unfortunately, I had to take the dark elf, who joins immediately and lives in Alvare.
So I played, completing all the quests in a row: the fire mage was very effective indoors thanks to "Hellfire" and "Fireball", while in the wild, the earth mage handled things, wiping out enemy rows with "Stone Blast" and "Death Bloom" (although outdoors the fire mage didn't stay idle, adding "Meteor Shower" on top. Meanwhile, the earth mage would fire "Hive" indoors (later "Blade", I couldn't find the book for it in the elemental guild for a long time), because "Stone Blast" at point-blank range would wipe out the whole party in 1, maximum 2 charges, even with "Protection from Earth" cast).
Essentially, with a party of 2 Necromancers, a DE, and a Minotaur, I reached Regna (by the way, clearing all three dragon caves available before Regna, including the one in the Snake Gorge, and upon arriving at Regna, the first thing I did was clear the cave there).
But then another discomfort started to be felt: my first Necromancer was completely filled with bottles, reagents, and other alchemy gear, and the 3 other expedition members were clearly not enough to carry the abundant loot back to town. So I decided to take a 3rd Necromancer, the first one available in the Travelers' House (at the end, he was 2 levels behind the party). The 3rd Necromancer became a pure dark mage, so initially, his participation in battle ended after 5-10 seconds (either he went into a stun immediately, or he ended up there after spending all his Mana (3-4 spells).
So, in the end, with a party consisting of:
Lich-Fire
Lich-Earth
Lich
Dark Elf
Minotaur
I beat the whole game once again.
The only achievement was that not a single dragon was used, neither the knight from the Necromancer's Laboratory nor Kauri Darkspike were accepted into the party, and a class that is usually supportive (Necromancer -> Lich) became the main one.
In the end, my fire mage was leveled up to 26 in fire magic and the elemental staff added +12 (too bad the staff bonus doesn't stack with the fire ring bonus, though that would have made an incredibly strong character). A wonderful spell like "Incinerate" dealt 53-585 damage, minus fire resistance (it rarely hit below 300-350). True, my fire mage had a hard time in the Fire Dimension, though the fire elementals also had a hard time thanks to "Magic Protection" (I don't remember exactly, but it gave about +190 protection).
Earth magic for the second Lich, as well as darkness for the third, was leveled up to +19. The second one also had an earth ring, which gave +11 to earth. As for the dark mage, I found no bonuses.
I decided to be eccentric once more and leveled the elf's bow to 19, and gave him the dark elf crossbow mentioned earlier, resulting in: two arrows + 36-38 damage each + twice as fast + never misses; in general, pretty decent long-range support for the mages.
For the Minotaur, I only managed to level the axe to 19, as well as bodybuilding (the first time I played, my infantryman had less than 1k HP at the end of the game :()
After that, there was an attempt to go through with a Necromancer+Vampire or Necromancer+Troll (or Necromancer+Troll+Vampire) party, but since the wrong element – water – was chosen as the primary (it is almost completely useless indoors (at the start), and quite mediocre on the surface). In the end, the project was abandoned.
Immediately, an attempt was made to go through with 1 character, the same Necromancer, this time as an air specialist, and a bit of an alchemist (alchemy is a very useful thing at the start).
Air magic began to perform much better than any other elemental magic, but the mass spell "Starfall" only appears at Grand Master level (sparks are cool, of course (especially in narrow passages), but I wanted something better). The project was similarly abandoned after I imagined opening chests, absolute poverty, and a very difficult time clearing rooms where everything jumps on you from all sides at once. And I got quite tired of the game; I hope the fan version of the game will be finished someday.
P.S. apologize for the mistakes and possibly for repeating things already written and known many times; I discovered the forum recently.
P.P.S. hope it was interesting.
