When deploying troops for one of the sides, press "automatic battle." After the initial reconnaissance, the computer will take over and control that side.
Let the red player be you, and the blue player be the computer. Start the duel as usual. Reconnaissance. Deploy your (red) troops. Now it's the blue player's turn. Don't touch anything, but click "automatic battle" (the button is slightly above and to the right of the "Start Battle" button). That's it.
Choosing a hero? Just click, and that’s it... If you’re playing on a single computer, after that, you need to click “next” and select the hero, then click “start”.
You have the wrong mode selected. You need "Single Player" (I don't know how it's called in English), otherwise the human opponent will choose the enemy hero. So, select Multiplayer -> Single Player -> Duel.
