You're wrong, they definitely gave up. The units could have been made in a more or less classic style, perhaps taking some elements from the fifth game and some from the third. Just make them prettier and add more features. There's no need to over-fantasize. And everyone would be happy. But when they turned the Orcs into Papuans and the Necromancers into some kind of Aztecs, it's unclear why they went in that direction. P.S. At least the shamans look like Orcs, which is more familiar.
On the new engine, everything looks better anyway, and the units clearly have no fewer abilities than in previous games in the series. By the way, in the fifth game, when creating factions, the developers were also inspired by various cultures: the Orcs are like steppe nomads, the mages are in the style of the Middle East, and so on. The sixth game is the same, only other cultures were taken as a basis; the Orcs, in my opinion, have an original and fresh design, due to the territory in which they live in Ashan. It's all logical. The Necromancers, by the way, are in the Egyptian style, not the Aztec style. This kind of "cultural" division makes the difference between factions more noticeable, so that they are not just a set of creatures.Lordesat
To the fact that everything is too extravagant. And I personally got used to the fact that Heroes was a more serious game.
We haven't seen the game yet, but based on the screenshots, it looks much more serious than the fifth game, where many models look like illustrations from children's fairy tales.
Армия баранов под предводительством льва сильнее армии львов под предводительством барана.
God save us everyone Will we burn inside the fires of a thousand suns...
It's hard to judge. In the fifth game, the editor is not very complex in general, except when it comes to quests. If scripts are not needed for quests here, then everything is fine.
The developers seem to have promised a user-friendly editor, so let’s hope that’s the case, although they’ve already impressed us with the variety of units.

Fantasy has its canons. They need to be followed. Respect the professor.
Well, Heroes never followed the canons))) What about dwarves in an elven castle and almost adding the Forge? Demons + Necropolis in the 4th installment... Okay, okay, I'll be quiet. In general, the 3DO Heroes borrowed a lot from D&D, and Ubisoft's games borrowed from Warhammer. For example, the same geographical principle. Ubisoft is trying. The presence of a justification for practically everything (unlike the previous Heroes) also deserves respect.
12 heroes on one map? If the computer takes just as long to make its move as it did in the previous game, then playing against 11 AI opponents, it could take an entire year to complete a single map! And in general, I don't understand why they're introducing so many characters. In my opinion, 8 is the optimal number!
Based on the screenshot, the editor also seems to be based on King's Bounty :p.
Why? The editor is based on Warlords 3.

More isn't less; you can always disable the extras. =Feel999=

I noticed the similarity to the editor from King's Bounty as well. But so far, I like this one more.
