Actually, it's not a fact. The phrase "because of the gladiolus" is one of the few that has become popular and truly a catchphrase. But whether it was the dumplings that came up with it, someone might not remember.

P.S. There used to be a poll on the website about quotes from KVN. Based on it, people only remember "because of the gladiolus" and "buckwheat with sausage." The rest of the quotes are not accessible to a wide audience.
