Something terrible happened on Earth (it doesn't matter what—apocalypse, nuclear war, alien invasion, a matriarchal takeover—don't think about it), and you (yes, yes, exactly you) must save the world, but here is the catch—there are only two ways to resolve the situation:
1. You save the world, but you die/pass into another realm/burn in hell (whichever you prefer); for the first two weeks you are honored, called a hero, and glorified, but then... Then you are nobody. Everyone forgot. No one cares what you did.
2. You stay alive. Alone. There are no people. You are their sole representative. Otherwise, why would I want a world in which there is no "me"?
What will you do, hero?

I'd like to support Ara's thesis: a person cannot exist completely alone in an empty world. In this case, I think an acceptable option would be the absolute end of the world, or at least intelligent life within the solar system, i.e., roughly speaking, the second option plus suicide.
