I'm currently using Windows XP, but I'll be switching to Vista soon. I hope it works smoothly on the local network without any glitches.

In principle, things are starting to move forward... We can switch to Vista. It's not as raw as it used to be. But you need to use only the good versions. You know what I mean.*

I personally recommend the Vista DNA build, which is based on Ultimate. It runs smoothly, and I haven't encountered any problems in the last 3 months.

Vista consumes more RAM, and sometimes it gets annoying with its constant, silly questions (although, as far as I know, there are ways to disable them). Many people are used to older software that refuses to work under Vista; you just have to accept it, as it's the price of progress. Moreover, at the moment, new versions of most popular and less popular programs have appeared, and they work perfectly on Vista. And some older ones, despite warnings about incompatibility, generally work quite correctly.

I liked the search function in Vista. It's much faster and more convenient than the XP version. I've come to terms with the memory consumption, as I don't play much these days.

Memory? Well, yes, memory. In my opinion, that's its biggest flaw. However, 600-800MB out of 3.5GB... in general, it's up to you)

Yeah, it's all nonsense))) anything that consumes more than 150MB at idle isn't an operating system; it's something else entirely.

So, if you don't demand that the computer run Crysis and Photoshop at the same time, then you can easily live with 1 GB of RAM on Vista, and that's, well, not much:)

I tested it myself; I ran Photoshop CS4, AutoCAD 2009, Microsoft Office 2007, and Heroes of Might and Magic V on maximum graphics settings.
At the same time, the amount of RAM used did not exceed 1 GB =)

Vista itself (without running any programs) consumes 1 GB.
And Windows 7 is planned for 2010, so we'll see...

Alternative OS! (Linux, MacOS)

Hmm, yes, they really came up with a good name – "alternative"! In my opinion, the time is not far off when you will all be using the "alternative Linux OS," and you will already be writing about Windows as "alternative," because Windows is the limit of what Microsoft could create; it won't get any better. Although, I repeat, this is just my opinion, and I may be wrong, and perhaps the release of Windows 7 will save them.

But I can say with certainty that the old Windows will be the last OS from Microsoft that I use.:smile38:

Yeah, and hammering in a decorative nail with an eight-kilogram hammer is also normal. (This is about Vista and some simple application running on it.)
When you can take a complete set of necessary (and not only) tools weighing a couple of kilograms and do everything you need with them.
