So, the problem is either with the drivers (DirectX) or with the hardware (hard drive with bad sectors, the computer is overheating - the cooler is not working, insufficient RAM or disk space, etc.).

I haven't noticed any problems with other programs or games. Everything seems fine with the hardware; the computer doesn't overheat, there's plenty of memory, and there's ample disk space. DirectX is updated. The only thing I suspect, although it might not be the cause, is the video driver. I'll need to check that somehow.

The problem is resolved; it was all due to the video driver. For some reason, the version of the driver I had (which was quite old) didn't work well with the game.

try going into the properties of Setup.exe and enabling compatibility mode with XP before running it.

Try buying a licensed disc, and also remove all accelerators/optimizers and other programs that your well-meaning friends might have installed on your computer. If that doesn't help, install the operating system that was present when you purchased the computer. The effectiveness of this advice is 99%. The only problem for Heroes is integrated graphics cards. A relatively common sound on board system at the time, as well as other integrated systems, can negatively affect performance. Step 1: Buy the Breath of Death expansion disk.
(If Breath of Death also freezes, we move on.)
Step 2: Delete and reinstall all drivers (especially for the video card, sound, and motherboard).
Step 3: Install a different DirectX version.
Step 4: Try launching Heroes after removing the sound card from the devices list.

Hooray, the game is running! All it needed was to be set to compatibility mode with Windows 98. (Strange, but I think I already tried setting the compatibility mode:confused:) Never mind, it's working now.

I have 2GB of RAM, a 128MB video card, Windows XP SP2, and a monitor resolution of 1280x800. The game is Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia, published by "Buka," but the game version isn't the issue; the same thing happens when I launch HoMM3.5 WoG.

There might be an issue with the display, as the heroes are designed for a 4:3 resolution, while you seem to have a 16:9 resolution. I don't know what to suggest; perhaps someone else can offer some advice.
