Has anyone else encountered a similar bug with Necropolis?

I completed it without any problems on the Warrior difficulty. On the Hero difficulty, I spent about 30 minutes dancing around the elephant, then ran away when it chased me. Finally, I waited for it to move north. I immediately rushed to the Dungeon. I didn't even break through the Fortress. Later, when the elephant captured the Dungeon, I returned to the surface and collected everything I hadn't managed to get before.

Exactly, you just need to lure the mage by running within his line of sight, but outside his attack range. Usually, he chases after you, and there are many alternative routes – the main thing is to get him to move away from the crossing point.

The Mage glitched me out! I entered a building, and it said, "Do you want to fight Markel?" I agreed and won, but then I got kicked out! After that, I downloaded Heroes 1.1 and completed it! It was tough against the undead, especially Koly! And it was also difficult to complete Markel's first mission in campaign 5, where you have to defeat the Orange and collect 20 coast dragons! I played for a long time while building them!

The mage was difficult, as was the undead (mission 3).

I think the most difficult one is the one I can’t complete: getting Aglaia to Tieru.

In the Necropolis campaign, the last mission was the most challenging for me. I had heavily upgraded Godrick. And with him, angels multiply with incredible force on the hero. IMHO, against a well-upgraded Godrick, you should attack no later than the 2nd week.

And in the 3rd mission, I collected over 100 dragons. I didn't lose a single one because I immediately gave them to Isabella. Even on the hero, Markel can defeat all the mages without dragons.

I thought Inferno was awesome, but the Elves are a joke. Our hero tells such funny jokes there, especially in the mission with Nicola.

Inferno was in the demo. They work perfectly. I agree that the Elves are underdeveloped.

The most challenging mission is the third mission in the second campaign of Hammers of Fate, where you play as the Dwarves on Hero difficulty. Try defending the Dwarven city with an outnumbered force on Hero difficulty, regardless of the time it takes. This is probably the most difficult mission I've ever completed in the Heroes series.

I'm currently playing through Inferno, and I'm thinking of playing as the Elves next, but they say it's a tough choice...
We'll see.
