— You will unhinderedly give me Meshera alive and unharmed, and allow us to leave. In that case, I don't intend to harm you. The moment I see otherwise — everything is void.

— And you won't try to free the Hero?

I looked at my true friend, and we met eyes. It's hard to say what he felt at that moment, but I seemed to see both sorrow and even gratitude there. He... Valued mine and Meshera's lives more than his own. Sometimes I wanted to scold him verbally for that, and that time especially. Ah yes, there was something else. The Hero was clearly darting his eyes from side to side, as if saying "No!"

— Provided your conditions are met, I won't try, — I finally said, turning my eyes to Stantri.

— I think there's much more in common between us than differences. A pity we'll soon part as enemies, — he grinned, pulling out the teleport. I stepped closer, pondering options for quickly breaking Stantri's protective barriers or killing him some other way. Perhaps he noticed, because he grinned even wider, throwing the artifact to the ground with a characteristic cracking sound. The surrounding landscape blurred for a moment.

Of course, all this time Stantri could have simply fled from me by exactly the same method we were now using to move.

After the brightly lit area near the breach, the dim light of the laboratory barely allowed us to see the golems surrounding us in the first second.

Of course, Stantri didn't run — he staged this whole scene because he badly needed the Lands' best blacksmith, and his insatiable curiosity about my new condition only fueled him further.

— You know, Erefir, I think I forgot, but I do have a magic shield after all, and it can withstand a couple of your hits, right? If so, let's change the terms a little...

He didn't finish the last word, because I jumped back, throwing my entire pouch of teleport stones at his feet. I think there were four of them. To be honest, I didn't want to carry out such a brutal execution on a former friend, but I had no better ideas, given both the damage shield, the hostage, and the enemy's numerical advantage: and the last two factors still remained.

Stantri managed to command his golems, or maybe they perceived me as an intruder on their own, and now I faced a battle in an enclosed space against an extremely tough opponent. Better than going straight into a locked prison cell, but far from an ideal option. And yet, now I thought that if I tried hard, I could save everyone.

I didn't think that I myself would need saving. My infected, undead body desperately didn't want to fall under the hail of blows, but the bone-breaker also didn't take golems well. I wasn't prepared for such a battle — Stantri had never before demonstrated that he could handle something like this. Or maybe it wasn't him, but someone else? Worst of all, freeing the Hero to help me before the battle ended was impossible, and the golem holding him was something like a boss — it constantly tried to stun me from afar with something like an earthquake.

I was already on the brink when I suddenly heard a shout, and my heart sank into my boots. The Hero... Through some incredible effort, he apparently managed to free his mouth from the clay prison. He couldn't possibly hope to challenge the golems with that shout, could he? Alas, that's exactly what he did — his talents truly defied scientific explanation.

The golems furiously began pounding on the giant's back, forcing it to fend off the unexpected traitors, and in the end most of them soon turned into a pile of shattered shards, and I managed to finish off the rest myself. This was achieved, alas, at a dear price, because most of the Hero of Origins had been turned into pulp. Anyone else in his place would have given up the ghost, but on some incredible force of will, my savior was still breathing, and even found the strength to smile.

— Aquilius... Agis... P., — he wheezed one word after another.

— That's not necessary! You spent so long building the fame of your epithet, only to give up so easily! Please, hold on a little longer — I'll think of something! — burst out of me unexpectedly, but I only seemed to make him smile even more. The Hero wanted to say something else, but seemed to change his mind, and his eyes glazed over.

Through some kind of haze, I methodically and rather roughly began breaking the magical locks on the laboratory chambers. Yes, I had a rough idea where their weak points were, and thanks to brute force I didn't need the key... Alas, when I opened them all, I found only the corpse of the dark elf I had transported myself, the smeared remains of the republican traitor-mage across several rooms, and Meshera — also lifeless. As if the Universe had avenged my own cruel methods — the scholar's teleport had failed, because someone had forgotten something like a torture device in the middle of the chamber.

This ending could not have been further from what I read in romantic literature as a child.

And I wandered somewhere aimlessly. My own body had become my own cage; the only plus was that zombies don't cry. It was as if I had cut short the lives of those last people who were more important to me than myself and the rest of the world with my own green hands. I could find rational justifications for my unprofessionalism and blindness as much as I wanted, but my gut was an implacable judge. I, the insolent red fox, am alive, and they are not — that's the whole story. This beautiful world is accessible to my senses, however clouded they may be, but my friends no longer have that privilege.

I remembered my parents, whom I hadn't even tried to find for many years, though I cherished the hope that they were alive. Master Romsan, who certainly gave his life saving me in childhood. With all these thoughts, my newly acquired monstrous form seemed at least some compensation for their fates, though not sufficient.

I don't know how many days this went on. As luck would have it, I encountered neither monsters strong enough to finish me off, nor deadly enough anomalies, although, perhaps to my shame, I still felt self-preservation to the same degree as before. In any case, the idea of simply taking off the circlet of consciousness and sinking into an undead sleep met with active resistance from my thoughts — and not only because military honor was still alive in me.

Suddenly I saw a breach right before me. It seemed this wasn't the same one as the first two I'd seen, but a new one... Though with this fickle landscape, one couldn't be sure of anything, and I hadn't been tracking my route.

Strange that something had lured me here. Or was the space itself curved, increasing the chances of coming to one of the breaches if you wandered randomly, like a leaf driven by all winds?

Remembering the idea of the Dark Lands' miracles, and taking advantage of my new immunity, I decided to step closer. Then closer still. Soon even my zombie body was clearly suffering from the magical flow, but those ideas, which had once seemed jokey, kept ringing in me. This magic is alive. Thinking. It can manifest not only random phenomena, but often gives you exactly what you need. Victory. Insight. Life. Strength. Beauty. Friends...

— Come on, energy pillar, do something already! With my life! — I said probably the stupidest words since my youth. Surprisingly, the opposing wind changed to a following one, and I managed to quickly approach right up to the breach, touching it with what remained of my poor, falling-apart hand.

I don't remember what I saw there — my memory seems to have been erased afterward. But from the lingering sensory aftertaste — it was beautiful; that's how the stars above might look unhindered by atmospheric distortions, or all worlds in the palm of your hand, or all knowledge at the tip of a pen, or all souls in the stream of eternity. I came to with an intoxicating feeling that everything was within my power, though already fading, and now there's field grass around, and the breach is nowhere. The skin of my hands stands out against the surrounding terrain in a pale, slightly pinkish tone I've grown accustomed to, and my mind no longer seems like an artifact imitation of the former, living one.

For a second, my conscience pricked me again — not only did I outlive everyone, but I also avoided the worst consequences — and yet after the recent euphoria, I no longer wanted to think that way. Perhaps there was some meaning in it. Instead of self-flagellation, I sat down, tucking my knees, and began weighing further options. Surprisingly, there were quite a few: the TOKOMAK blueprints were still with me, the villages still needed saving, and the Lands hadn't exactly run short of villains. Among the latter, as far as I knew, there were even quite dangerous organizations that seemed to one degree or another competitors to the dead mage. This whole affair with Stantri might not actually be over.

Only one fundamental question remained: I had no intention of seeking new permanent allies. Otherwise, the possibilities were enormous. I probably won't describe everything that followed in detail, unless a new surge of inspiration comes over me. The main thing, and what affected me most strongly, I've resurrected in my memory, and that's enough — after all, diaries exist for systematizing life experience.

But that's a completely different story.
